Are you kidding me!! Modern card collecting?

I know everybody has there own opinions , and we collect what we like but I just had my eyes opened and I'm shocked!! I have always collected late 60's through mid 70's, went into the early 80's on star cards(Ripken, Gwynn, Boggs), but the initiation of other companies in the early 80's (Fleer and Donruss) really muddled the collecting for me. I always preferred the players one real rookie card, or a particular years issue, when three sets came out in 81' I pretty much stop collecting for some years then when I started again concentrated on my childhood years, the cards I remebered opening up in the packs.
The point I am getting at is , yesterday a friend of mine said he got his nephew a PSA 10 Micheal Vick 2001 Pacific rookie card , he wanted me to check out it's pop and so on because he knows I spend alot of time on the PSA site. I just went to the pop report on 2001 football, and to my suprise , there are over 200 sets!!!!! I find this mind boggling.I assume some might be subsets of some kind , but the list is longer the most sets I collect, I think this is crazy. I can't understand if you wanted to seek out certain modern rookie cards how you could ever figure out which ones to buy. I don't know, but it all seems crazy to me!

If it's worth doing..It's worth overdoing!!

You buy the most overhyped, overpriced, limited edition available and spend the next few months watching it drop and drop and drop in value!
One good thing about all the modern sets is the choices one has.
One day, I'll put some of them together, ( they'll be cheap enough ).
Some of the sets have simple action shots with great photography, which would be my taste,
and some of the sets look like they were designed by color-blind schizos on LSD, which I assume appeals to the kids.
"How about a little fire Scarecrow ?"
I quickly discovered... it is far less satisfying owning a psa 9 pinacle jeter rookie than a psa 8 1965 Mel Stottlemyre rc...
I guess it boils down to preferences...
I guess what blows my mind the most is that a sp #'ed rc of someone who hasn't scored a touchdown somehow costs the same as a gale sayers rookie...
at any rate... I bought one of those nice MJ Roop binders... and I collect newer cards in raw form and spend as little as possible acquiring them... and as soon as I get one that is worth anything, I suddenly get the urge to eBay it and put the money into something beautiful and vintage.
PS....
Howard gets my vote as the all time best collector... since it was him that first put the holy grail of new york knicks cards in my hands... a walt frazier rc!

As crazysc said, there is "something for everyone" in the modern card market. From $5- $500. There is nothing wrong with having choices, the problem is with people who can't make up their mind as to what they want.
I listed my ID as a "reseller" on Ebay. This allowed Ebay/non-Ebay users to contact me and
I would assist in selling there cards on Ebay for a fee. I listed my phone# and the calls started coming in.
Mainly the calls came from adult males who wanted to sell there collections.
Many of these folks had boxes of cards from the 80's and had severly unrealistic expectations about what
they would get for them in the real world.
I got so tired of explaining to grown men that the value of there David robinson rookies, 85 Kirby Puckett cards
was about %10-%20 of Beckett ifit would even sell at all.
It became depressing giving these folks a clue so I removed my ID from the program.
There are many folks out there who really think there cards are worth Beckett no matter the year or player.
Loves me some shiny!
So very, VERY true.....And so very, VERY sad.

Well said. I think your statement applies to vintage cards as well. I grade and buy graded cards to collect, not to sell for a profit someday. I am hopeful that I will complete my 1970 Topps Baseball set in the next 6 months or so. But I am also not so naive that I would expect to get back what I have into my set any time in the near future. I can also say the same for my '75 set (maybe not considered "vintage"). I've been getting these cards regularly for about what it costs for grading alone - frequently even less. If I sold my collection of '75s all in one shot, I'd still end up losing money. I'm not in it for that. I just like the cards. Nothing more, nothing less.
Collect what you like, like what you collect, enjoy it. After all, this is a "hobby", right?
