Back in the 1970s I used to buy coins from some guy in Texas named Bob Kelly. In the event that Mr. Kelly is still around, and still screwing his clientele, and happens to be reading this post, then I obviously was referring to a different Bob Kelly and this would not be, for example, slander.
I probably bought 50 coins or so from Kelly back then as I was learning the ropes in the hobby and bought lots of overgraded crap. didn't everybody?
Fast forward 20 years and all the stuff is body bagged by PCGS - except one.
This would be the 1892 Barber Dime which I bought from Kelly probably as an AU - I don't remember - and was one of the nicer coins except that it had some curious blue discoloration on the reverse (this was what they call 'toning' but I did not know that then).
Anyway, I remember discussing this curious coloring with Mr. Kelly at the time who recommended I clean the coin using baking soda and a Q-tip - which, not knowing what the heII I was doing, I did, vigorously and repeatedly until the coin was bright and shiny silver.
That coin came back in a PCGS MS65 holder, which I find more than a little ironic.
