In the good old days, before independent certification, "choice unc." usually corresponded with MS63 and "gem BU" usually meant MS65. However, these adjectives were and are very subjective and imprecise and I wouldn't put any faith in them on a general basis.
Unfortunately, (based on my experience) there are absolutely no guarantees of any kind on what "Gem BU" or "Choice" or any of those terms mean in terms of the rating system. One dealer may be much more lenient in his use of these terms than another. I always just assume this means AU-55+, then I'm not dissapointed.

I'm in complete agreement with Mark. Ogden, if those adjectives are used in an auction description, and you question the grade, then e-mail the seller and tell them of your expectations. If they start hemming and hawing, don't bid. If the seller is firm with his conviction the coin will grade 65, or better, has good Feedback and comments saying accurate grading, then bid away!
Guys I asked because the 1921 Pilgrim I bought from my dealer said that it was GEM BU. PCGS graded it MS-63. I agree with those who said MS-65 but I only paid $130.00 for it so I believe that I paid a fair price. I was just curious so I would be able to discuss this grade again with the same dealer.

I hate it when you see my post before I can edit the spelling.
Always looking for nice type coins
my local dealer
Gem BU means it was only slightly cleaned and moderately dipped
( He moaned, based on some BU "beauties" he bought from the big mail order folks)
