  • Can't really judge the luster (i.e. to determine if there was dipping) BUT, I'll go on a limb and say MS6 ..................................... 3 !!!!

What a very nice strike, look at the blade on the axe in the fasces ... I like it, can you take a cleaner/clearer picture to verify it some more ??

    Ken,

    Very Nice looking '21.

I reserve my judgement on the grade. I can't tell AU from MS!image

    Hi Ken,

Don't let these guys pull your chain, that's a nice Merc! I'll bet almost all the Merc heads would love to have it. My guess is 64. Can't see the bands well enough to tell if they are split, but looks to be a great reverse strike, the bands look full, so I'm guessing 64FB. Hope you are going to send it into PCGS. I've got my fingers crossed for you.

Well it fooled me!!! I finally had to print out the photos so I could see them side by side. Caught the wrong 9 almost immediately, then the 2. I still can't tell the difference in the reverses, even after knowing where to look. I will go home and look at some of mine so this does not happen to me again. Embarrassed.

    Wayne:

Here is a reverse of a Merc that would include the 21P. See whats missing.

Yep, Pretty good Job I thought but easy pickings for a Merc Person. Heck the 1931 Washington he had was simple for me to spot also. image

  • This is what I saw in Oklahoma City last yer, I held one just like it, and the guy didnt try to sell it, he was trying to let us tell him what was wrong with it, and sure enough I was fooled the first time, the nine is not correct. This was a good job on this dime for sure. Thank you for showing this one, it is just the education we all need to pay more attention to.

    Ken,

Thanks for the education! I didn't look that close at the date--now when looking at 1921 Mercurys I'll be more careful.

I'm getting into this kind of late, but as soon as I saw the date, I thought "Ken couldn't have bought this coin!" The 9 in the date is a dead giveaway, but so are the 1's. The 1's on a genuine 1921 are both wider at the top and bottom than in the center, and there's a very noticeable right-to-left downward slant at the tops. Also the second 1 is too far from the rim. The 2 isn't too bad, though. I don't think I've seen a 1921 without some flatness in the date. (They probably exist; I just haven't seen one.)

I bow to Ken's experience regarding the reverse, though. I don't know what's missing. All I can tell is that the leaves, especially on the right side of the fasces, are considerably fuller on a 1921 than on this fake. I don't want to go blind trying to count the leaves and berries, so Ken, please tell us what's missing.

A very educational thread. Maybe it'll keep someone from making a costly mistake.

Though I don't collect Mercs the obvious difference is in the type face. On the real coin the AT and the CA touch. In the fake the letters have space between them.

    Jim:

Although the Dime flunked the first test, the 9, I turned it over to see if the branches were connected to the bundle of sticks. Sure enough they were not so this confirmed the dime was made after 1925. Heck the 9 confirmed that also. Just something I look at. I suppose some skilled artist could have changed the whole date then the branch thing would have been a real factor to confirm that the coin was fake.

Seems we have alot of GURU's within the group, just as I suspected and knew. Very Cool.
