Do you put insurance on coins when you ship them?

On a recent trip to the Post Office, I was informed by the post master that the postal service will not insure coins. I was told the safest way to ship was by registered mail. Has anyone else had this happen?

Yes....it's the only way I'll ship them. Have had one lost and the post office paid! Not sure who you talked with but I know many forum members have been paid for lost/stolen coins shipped by the USPS.

I've never had to tell the post office it was coins in the package !!! Now I know you have to declare items for customs, but I've never had to do it for insurance.
Registered is the safest....but you can't register packages (so they tell me). In the past, to register...I've had to stick the padded envelope inside a big white envelope so that it didn't resemble a package...

As to insurance, the once or twice they've asked what's in it, I always say "small metal collector's items".
