Do you put insurance on coins when you ship them?

On a recent trip to the Post Office, I was informed by the post master that the postal service will not insure coins. I was told the safest way to ship was by registered mail. Has anyone else had this happen?

    John,

Yes....it's the only way I'll ship them. Have had one lost and the post office paid! Not sure who you talked with but I know many forum members have been paid for lost/stolen coins shipped by the USPS.

  • I've always insured any shipments over $20 - they've never given me any objection about it.

I allow the buyer to decide if they want insurance. I always use delivery confirmation whether insured or not. This way I know if the package was delivered. It does not guarantee that it was delivered to the correct address but this is the cheapest thing to that assurance.

I'm with Wayneme. I don't offer any options regarding insurance. I have had multiple (4?) lost packages in the last few years, and each claim was paid. Never a hassle, a little bit of a wait, but always paid by the USPS.

I've never had to tell the post office it was coins in the package !!! Now I know you have to declare items for customs, but I've never had to do it for insurance.

Registered is the safest....but you can't register packages (so they tell me). In the past, to register...I've had to stick the padded envelope inside a big white envelope so that it didn't resemble a package...
  • I always list them as collectables....but never had any postal person tell me they could not insure a coin....the can insure collectables....if they dont insure coins....how does the US Mint get away with sending.....things that make you go ummmmmmmm

You can register packages - I've sent several small boxes registered. The hassle is that my post office insists that thewhole surface be covered with that paper tape with the widely-spaced reinforcing fibers in an "X" pattern. I've sent my last couple submittals to PCGS in boxes registered. Takes about a half hour to do up the box, but they take it no problem.
As to insurance, the once or twice they've asked what's in it, I always say "small metal collector's items".

  • USPS will not accept padded envelopes of any type for registered mail.....it must be in another type of package or envelope..I simply take a small priority box, fold it backwards so the brown side shows...placed the padded envelope inside..and wrap the box with reinforced shipping tape....USPS takes without a problem!

The postmaster is full of crap. I know the local postmaster here and she knows that I collect coins, and most of the time I'm shipping stuff out, they're coins. She has no objections, and thinks the hobby is great. I've never had a problem with shipping them out.
