Any one ever see wild pastel toning on proof nickels from say 55 to 64

Ive been cutting open the so called flat pack proof sets since 1990 and have seen lots of nickels with toning, both attractive and unattractive. Seen lots of ice blue toning. Seen lots of gold. But three months ago I found a 62 with the wildest most beautiful electric pastel rainbow toning on both the obverse portrait and the reverse portrait. I also found a 59 with a beautiful Icy silver sheen on the obverse and a beautiful pastel rainbow covering 50% of the reverse. These coins are both in PCGS holders now. Im not at home, can provide a picture later, but of course digital pictures of toning is very hard to do, dont know if I can even get close. Any way under regular lighting these coins take your breath away, especially the 62. Let me know if you have seen any like this.

I am working on an example set, and have several nice coins that I'll post. My favorite, aside from the irridescent sea greens, is a dark black (looks chrome) with light blue devices. Some of them are gorgeous. Post pics when you get a chance.

i buy rolls looking for these. i got lucky once and had someone send me an entire roll of toned proof nickels - they were nice and i was hooked. i've sold some to people on this board and they seemed quite happy also.

I have a 1964 proof nickel that has great gold perimeter toning on both sides with the main images (Jefferson and Monticello) in sky blue. Really looks great. Even though there was not a hint of cameo, I had to have it slabbed just because it looked so cool. I can't get it to image worth a darn on my scanner though.
  • image Thanks to all. I appreciate the info and the pictures. I will post some soon as I can.

  • Please do post when you get a chance. Don't be surprised if you really need to tilt the coin at an angle to get the image (like the Texas B. T. coin).

I've got a few, one really very purple, one dark blue and two with wild colors. They are all raw (well I just sent one to PCGS). I've seen lots of ice blue and light gold ones. I have an older one with sea green and some reds. I just can't help but suspect my two wildest ones as not being natural (I wasn't the one to find them in a proof set).

......i have a raw 1956 that's probably a PR67-68 which appears brilliant with slight haze at first glance. all you need do is tilt it at the right angle and it lights up the night with rainbow colors!!!

the weirdest coin i have that's like that is a 1979 SBA that i bought cause its a deep charcoal color with cameo. one day it was sitting out and the sun coming in the window hit it just right!!! amen for light refraction!!!!!!! image

    Karl,

1964 is a significant date in numismatics. Radical changes brought on by panicky politicians, fear of shortages, drastic changes quickly implemented at the mint. It was one of the turning points in the history of coinage in this country.

Plus, it's the first year of the Kennnedy half dollar and the only year of the Accented Hair variety, so I buy a lot of 1964 proof sets. Unfortunately, all those other pesky coins come along with the halves.image
