Here's a weird toned Morgan. Wonder how this happened?

Just in from MBCoins......
If I saw this raw I'd say well, hmmm, I dunno.
In a NGC slab, MS63 86-P. It has an obv but it's just blue & green with a big hit on the face.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

Hmmmm, you sure find the unusual ones. How does the color sit on it? Kind of looks like you could use it for a seat cover on the, well you know.

Stman the color isn't dark & heavy like like that bag stuff, kinda thin & translucent. The luster blasts through like most 86-Ps do.
    Here's obv:

  • Very nice piece Dog97!

I love those subtle pieces as much as the wild ones!

  • Dog 97, I've bought 15-20 coins from MB. He always has some good looking stuff. I still remind myself to never let something good get away if I can help it. Lost out on a RW album with a few toned quarters!

    Kscope.....
  • Maybe the bag it was in sat in a puddle of water caused by leaking pipes or roof, moved, and turned that way when it dried. Interesting to think about.

Dog, Yea on the rev the tone looked like it was thin and not deep into the surface. So how do you think it toned that way?

I should have my Violet/Purple lady from the same seller any day now.

I guess the irregular shaped untoned area on the reverse is where the blob of gum or glue was that held it to a board.

Seen a morgan like that, raw, but the white spot on the rev was the size of a dime, didn't buy it,the guy wanted to much.If the morgan would have been in a slab,i still wouldn't have bought it,but it looked ok.

I think the glue theory is very good. I was thinking somewhere along that line.
  • I agree with Cam40....some type of adhesive or substance that was later removed without affecting the adjacent toning. Interesting looking piece.
  • Any one can make a mistake. There are lots of AT coins in both PCGS and NGC holders. This one has been done with a cold chemical process. This coin has artificially enhanced toning. My humble opinion.

I don't know. If someone was intentionally going to AT a coin, wouldn't they make an effort to not leave a big suspicious bright area on the back? I mean it takes a pretty calculating mind to stick an adhesive on a coin and THEN say, now I'm going to AT it. Or, are you saying that the AT process you named (I don't know what a cold chemical process is...unless its in a 16 oz. beer stein) explains the sharp edges between the toned and untoned surfaces?

  • Mr Greg, check out some of the books on the subject in the ANA library or attend some of their forums on AT and you will know what a cold chemical process is. It is simply the introduction of some type of chemical solution to the surface of a coin in some type of liquid form without the addition of a heat source. An eye dropper would work fine to do the type of untouched center you see on this coin. Im not stating categorically that this coin is AT. Im only saying that it can be done that way. That is a fact. What is not a fact is what has happened to this coin. Without a close up personal inspection to say that for sure is impossible.

  • I think that if it was a liquid that was put on it, it would have to be a very thick liquid. The toning on the wings is the example I'm going to use. Most likely, if it was a liquid, the liquid would have gone down the wing, because the height of the design goes down, as you go down the wing. As previous members said, I also think that there might have been some adhesive in that spot, which was removed.

I say the coin was taped to some kind of holder, and where the tape was, there was no toning. That's my official unofficial opinion. Worth about 3c in today's market image
