The reason we argue so much....

Is probably because the very coins we are trying to get graded vary so much...

Answer these questions if you would - Below are 4 coins - all the same year and mint, all graded MS64:

1. Which was graded by PCGS?

2. Of all of these - Which one would you want to add to your collection (provided you wanted an MS64 dollar)

3. If you were selling these, which would you put the gratest value on?

I think by the time we gather a few answers we'll have a lot of the answer as to why we differ so much in our opinions about grading and pricing.

    My guess is #2.

The one with the least amount of tarnish, probably #1.

<< <i>3. If you were selling these, which would you put the gratest value on? >>

Hard to tell from the images offered...it would be the one with the best luster and least contact marks. Basically, the one that really does grade the highest.

  • I'd reject 3 and 4 for what I think are unattractive toning colors / patterns.

1 is, in my opinion, too bagmarked to be a 64.

2 is wild. I'd want that one for myself, and I'd think it would be worth the largest premium.

I'm guessing coin 4 is the PCGS piece.

  • I think what it's pretty obvious that the reason that we argue about coins is that basically everyone has a different view of what they like and don't like, or what is graded right and wrong and by whom - it's becoming rather clear isn't it?

There all nice and its tough to say which one was graded by PCGS... perhaps its a trick question. On the lighter side, the real question we want answered is: Where does the pooch get the smokes?

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

  • At least we're agreeing to disagree and that's what this posting was to be all about.

As I mentioned, all of these coins are MS64.

Yes - #2 - "The Smoking Lady" as I like to call her - is the PCGS entrant

#1 is the Prooflike from this morning - great mirrors and cameo effect - very pretty in person

#3 is really a wonderful coin - very few marks gold with subtle magenta over the main device area that makes the entire coin look like a rainbow as you turn it.

#4 is a killer end roll coin with the paper patterns very well laid out and colors that would knock your socks off overlaying a semiprooflike surface.

    Happy days all image

You guys that didn't pick #4 are just plum crazy and have no taste on numismatics at all!
    #1 White shiny Morgan...yawn...
#2 Kinda neat but the paint is scratched off in front of Liberty's nose.
#3 Hmm.. don't know what that's going on there.
#4 Cool colors and unusual tone pattern and everybody knows endrollers are the best.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

We are finite beings, limited in all our powers, and, hence, our conclusions are not only relative, but they should ever be held subject to correction. Positive assurance is unattainable. The dogmatist is the only one who claims to possess absolute certainty.

I'd go for #1, providing it hasn't been dipped/toyed with. #2 looks like an X carved above the "smoke", 3 and 4 look AT. Also 3 and 4 have a little too weak strike for my taste.
