1950 MS68 Roosevelt Reserve was $8,500

High bidder reported that the Seller had a reserve of $8,500. Did he really want to sell the coin??

I don't think he really wanted to sell. That seems very high. mdwoods

  • A fair number of people use ebay as a punt. If they get the price they want, no matter how seemingly outrageous, its for sale. Just takes one fanatical collector -

Does it cost the seller if they have a high reserve that's not met?

Just to make it interesting, I think there should be a 1% chance that the coin should still sell even if the reserve is not met. Kind of like playing the powerball. There are just too many coins out there that people just put out there with no intention of ever selling them. At least this 1% randomness will make them think!!!!!
  • yes,

he had to pay ebay fees on an $8500 listing, rather than the opening. probably cost him around $100 TO list.

Unless Ebay rules have changed it cost $3 to list this coin. (I don't know if he used Featured Listings, which would be more)

  • I think dbldie55 is close, eBay charges for reserves that are not met. Perhaps the cost to list would be $3-$6.

FYI it would take 2 fanatical collectors to reach that reserve image

It cost him $3.30 to list the auction (30¢ insertion fee & $3 reserve fee). He pays no other fees since the auction did not close with a successful bidder.

Thanks to ebay's "black-out", we never got to see just how high the bidding would go. If I were a betting man, I'd certainly bet on the active bidders following up and trying to strike a deal. I see the seller just listed a couple new coins but did not relist that one - could it be gone already??? Anybody ready to own up to plucking this uber GEM?
