Question about Mint sets

I have several mint sets dating from 1969 to 1973. I plan on selling some of them, but my question is: on the "D" mint sets, all the coins have the "D" on them. But on the "S" mint sets, not all of the coins have an "S". For example, the 1970 "S" set only has the S on 1 penny, the nickel & the quarter. The other penny and the dime have no mark at all. Is this normal? I have several S sets this same way so it probably is - but I just want to make sure. Thanks!

The 1970-S set with the dime haveing no "S" is a rare Mint error and highly sought after.

You're talking about mint sets right? Mint sets in 1970 should include a 70S penny and nickel - but no quarters were made that year in San Francisco. Could you be looking at a teeny little D instead? - The mint set should contain 12 coins total

The `70 S set there are two types .A small and large date .The small date are the `better`set.Do you know which of the two you have?
  • These are mint sets - in cellophane. But what I just noticed is, the one I thought was just San Francisco is actually a mixture of Philadelphia & San Fran. So that is probably why there's coins without the S on them! I have a 1969 set the same way. Also, Frank said they should contain 12 coins - all of these sets have only 5 or 6 coins in them - the ones with 5 also have the plastic "Bureau of the Mint" disk. The ones with 6 coins don't have the disk in them, but are sealed in the same cellophane. For example - the 1972D set is 5 coins (half dollar/quarter/nickel/dime/penny) and the 1972 (no mint) set has 6 coins (half dollar/quarter/nickel/dime/ 2 pennies - one of the pennies has an S mint mark) I also have two 1971 sets the same way......hummmmm. So what do you think???

FC57coins got it right except that the '68-'70 mint sets are 10 coin sets. These each
have an S cent and nickel in the blue Philly packet. If there's an S quarter it is most
likely a proof which has been substituted. Check for clear tape where the set was cut.

  • No idea about the small or large date - I don't know how to tell!!

The P and D sets combined make the mintset. In those years the San Francisco mint was supplementing the coinage by issuing business strikes, so they were included in the mint set as well. I did make a mistake - forgot that the half dollar was only made in Denver that year so you're right - you should only have 11 coins for the 1970 set.

  • No - like I said, the 1969 & 1970 sets are Philadelphia & San Fran - so the quarter in them are Philadelphia....so "S".

Mint sets can be confusing. Some I think even have an empty spot in the set where the 1c would go.Certain years had partial sets, etc.
I think Flash had a similar post awhile back on that subject.

1970 mint set should contain two packets, one red from Denver and one blue from Philadelphia. both have 5 coins.

Denver----------cent, nickel, dime, quarter and half dollar all with a "D" mintmark.
Philadelphia----cent, dime and quarter with no mintmark and a cent and nickel with an "S" mintmark.
