Is PCGS easier on the cameo designation for Lincolns than for other series?

Just got this in for my type set:

image

It's holdered as a 66CAM, recently graded and the pic accurately reflects the degree of contrast. It's a pretty coin, and I like it, but to me it doesn't look like it should be cameo. I have very little experience with these, so I'm wondering if this is the norm? A lower threshhold for the designation?

For wheat cents, the reverse doesn't need to be cameo in order to get the cameo designation. At least that is what Rick said a long time ago.

A little hard to tell from the photo, but there is contrast, and it looks to be decent enough for cameo. Always heard PCGS used only the obverse to grade cameo on the wheat backs.

It's not super frosty, but then again you said it was CAM not DCAM

  • Don is correct. The answer to your question is NO. Aboslutely not!

  • Not a lower threshhold Russ, just harder to find. The color and mirrors are rarely that good. I've taken to using a halogen light to look for frost breaks. I still don't know how PCGS determines DCAM, from CAM, but I'm getting closer. I'm going to try my skill on some 60's and 70's where both sides count.

To me it looks like a cameo.I would need a reason why it does NOT look like a cameo

If you don't like the coin don't buy it.

Merz forgot what cameos look like because he stopped collecting cameos
  • Im sorry Stewart but you misunderstood! I was most certainly not arguing with PCGS. I was agreeing that their cam designation is not easier for copper proofs. I bought a group of ten unopened 58 flat packs last summer and sent seven of the 58 cents in to PCGS. Three came back 67CAM. Two came back 66 CAM and two came back pr67. I still use PCGS for lots of proofs. I only like to jump on them to vent a little bit but I still give them lots of my money and will continue to do so!

    Stewart,

Not sure who that was directed at, but if it was me you might want to re-read my post.
