Eye-candy but not necessarily educational...

This coin post (and images) might not end up being particularly educational but it will hopefully be pleasurable, at least.

The 1883 $5 below is formerly from the H. W. Bass collection and has been graded PR67 by PCGS. It was certified before the Cameo and Deep Cameo (DCAM) designations were used and it would surely receive the Cameo designation (if not DCAM) today. Please note, many 19th century proof gold coins (of all denominations) of this design are available with cameo or DCAM contrast.

It is one of only 61 proofs struck for that year (that makes it a RARE COIN !) and at the time it was certified, was one of just (5) PR67 $5 Liberty's of all dates, so graded by PCGS. For an interesting diagnostic that can be seen in the images, Walter Breen notes "odd minute raised marks in both loops of second 8."

High quality proof gold coins such as this can be among the more beautiful coins you are likely to encounter, in my opinion, at least. Enjoy!

Sure is a pretty coin Mark. Some day, when I have my daughter out of college, maybe....just maybe. I appreciate the look.

That is an awesome coin. Think I can gold plate my 1883NC and pass it off as one?

  • How come you don't send the coin back in to PCGS to get the CAM or DCAM designation. Wouldn't that increase its value?

I see the coin listed on your site. Can I place this on a 75 year lay-away?

dbldie55 - in answer to your 2 questions - 1) NO and 2) NO - sorry and sorry. imageimage

littlewicher - there are two reasons that the coin has not been resubmitted for Cameo or DCAM designation. The first is that it is not our coin - it has been consigned by a client and it is his decision. The second is, that as I mentioned previously, proof gold coins from that era are not tough to locate with frosted devices and cameos don't typically bring premiums. A DCAM designation might make the coin worth more but that possibility has already been taken into account in the pricing of the coin.
  • Thanks for the New Year's candy. Being a base metal, gold retains a pristine beauty that always catches my eye and this example has terrific eye appeal.
Buy the coin...but be sure to pay for it.
