I do not believe what you have is a doubled die, and it is not the one listed in the book even if it is a doubled die. I have three different doubled dies for 1972S, and all of them have a spread that would have been noticeably different in your scan.

You're referring to a single Philadelphia mint die. Not only is this coin an "S" mint for which there are no fewer than three different doubled dies, but all three mints including the proofs have a total of over 15 different doubled dies.
I do not see any evidence of machine doubling on the coin pictured, nor do I see a doubled die.
Looks like a DDO to me, rikker. But just to make sure, could you post a larger image? I have a 38" computer monitor, so I can handle a bigger image. Regarding the value of the 72-S, I would say $3. Anything that you need to view from a telescope on mountain top observatory is not interesting to me.
