about the p.c.g.s. grading guarentee, anyone ever use it here?

i don't know what the rules of using the process for a regrade are so i'm curious if anyone can explain a few thngs; 1st has anyone here ever gone thru the process for an upgrade or a downgrade? 2. while the benefits of receiving an upgrade are obvious, if you think you have a technically over graded coin in a p.c.g.s. slab and submit it for a downgrade, if p.c.g.s. agrees with you its a point lower do they pay you the difference and send you the coin back in a newly downgraded slab at no charge?

That would be one of the solutions. Sometimes, though, they may also simply buy the coin outright at market for the grade and keep it.

The policy on the guarantee resubmissions is that we pay the cuurent market value for the original grade and we keep the coin...or we pay you the difference between the current market value of the original grade and the resubmission grade and you keep the coin...your choice.

Mine was entered into the PCGS system 11/26/02. Still waiting for contact...

A similar coin is on TT right now with a $4900 bid. Didn't pay that much, but I would surely deposit the checkimage

thanks for the reply david. the second most expensive piece in my collection might fit that solution, but if i go through with it since you say it would be my option, i would want the coin back in a down graded slab and be paid the difference and still have my coin. since i'm a free member of this site can i send this coin directly to p.c.g.s. for a regrade or should i submit it through an authorised p.c.g.s. dealer? thanks, barberlover

    Barberlover-

I have recently had to use the PCGS guarantee and I can tell you first hand that they do treat their submitters right. I dealt with Charlie and it was surprisingly easy and smooth. Since you're not a gold or platinum collectors club member you technically have to send it in via a dealer however I think if you call PCGS directly and speak to Charlie he may be able to accomodate you (although I can't speak for him). I think it will probably depend on if you think the coin was simply technically overgraded or if you think it was damaged/mishandled. Like I said, call Charlie and he'll tell you what to do.

I will never use the PCGS grading guarantee because I would never buy a overgrade mistake. Also, I would never pay anyone to write their opinion on a piece of paper and then cram it into a plastic anchor. The best way to avoid dealing with over or under graded slabs is to stay away from them. I do, however, enjoy purchasing under graded mistakesimage

...........hey barberlover, call PCGS customer service in the morning and get the answer and procedure straight from the horses mouth. they'll explain to you the cost, how to fill out the submission form so it gets routed properly and may even give a name to attach for attention.

I just used it as well. I'll get the check the coin back (raw of course)
  • NumisEd, PCGS will also make good on coins that have gone bad after being holdered. They also guarantee the color of copper.

Compare that to trying to get your money back from a dealer that sold you a raw coin that develops a fingerprint over time.

The PCGS holder is more than just a grade opinion.

Supercoin, you nailed me with that one. I can't argue with that. You are right. Imagine taking an 09-S VDB in MS-65 RD back to a dealer and try to explain that the finger print just showed-up one day. Ha!! I guess there are some benefits to slabs.

sady sta 1, did i understand you correctly to say that if you choose the option of getting your coin back that they don't reslab it in the now lower grade, but send it back to you raw? or is that only a request on your part?
