Will PCGS do something about this 1972 DDO Lincoln!!!!!!!!!????????????? HELP

goose3goose3 Posts: 11,471 ✭✭✭
Ok, coin is my stepfathers. He has had for quite a while. It's in one of the Old little rattler holders. Cert#2192631 slabbed as MS65RED

Coin has acquired bunch of spots and partial fingerprint on rev. I am thinking the lower portion of the obverse is also a fingerprint. He says it was a brilliant red with NO marks when he bought IN the slab. Now the coin is a DOG!!!!!!!!!! would never slab as Gem and probably not full red.

what should he do with it.
the pics don't show the extent of the marks especially on the obverse! YUCK!!!!!!!!!

I think that the best thing to do is to have NCS currate the coin to remove the damage. In other words, NCS should dip (aka clean) the coin, professionally of course. The next step is to send it back into PCGS for a regrade. At the most you will have $50 and time into fixing the problem.

Couldn't you send it in for a grade review? Will they reimburse you for copper damage?

  • Hey Goose
You know how I feel about NCS,
And you saw the work they did for me, I would give them a try..
I'm Sure they can restore it back to it's original, flavor..
Give them a chance, and good luck..

First let pcgs regrade it and reimburse you the difference in value then send it to ncs.

Is 100% right on.You have to give PCGS a chance to make it right.

How is it PCGS's fault that the coin "grew" mold in the holder years after they slabbed it? Why should they have to pay? It's not their fault that the coin toned unpleasantly in it's tomb. This is just one of many inherent problems with certified coins (slabs)......the surface of coins, or any other metal object, WILL change with time. I think that it's up to the owner of the coin to crack it out, fix it, then resubmit it to PCGS or whomever they choose to waste their money on for an opinion.

Irrelevant. It is part of PCGS's guarantee, regardless of who caused it or if it continued from when they saw it. The theory is that they should have spotted it. But if the coin no longer grades the same, then it is in PCGS's best interests to have the coin removed or regraded to fit its current condition.

  • Then They shouldn't offer a guaranty.

edited to say, nwcs your pretty quick

So how do I go about submitting it? cost?

He has to pay for them to honor their guarantee?

    Thanks so far all!

No, just call them. There is no cost for it so far as I'm aware of.

Neil, you make a very good point. It only hurts their name to have that coin, in it's current condition, in one of their holders.

I would think it's worth having PCGS take a look. Your out at least the postage.

How do things work with NCS and PCGS? If it's a PCGS coin and you don't think they will take care of it and NCS works on it for lets say haze. At this point is it just a raw coin going back to PCGS. Will they know is used to be in their slab?

I dont think its too bad of a dog.So the fingerprints will never come out. Most Keys have stuff wrong with them.
If it ever gets to a nice chocolate brown the prints will be less noticable.Small consolation.image

I agree with Cam, you should wait 20 years to see how it really tones before you make any rash decisionsimage-----BigE
