$10 gold with big mark

How would you grade a coin such as this one with a big deep mark like this but with excellent surfaces otherwise and great eye appeal even thogh it has this damage? mike imageimage

  • image Hey what a beautiful coin otherwise. Unfortunately, I believe that will be considered a heavy mark in a prime focal area, lets see, MS62 is probably the best PCGS or NGC will do. It will be 62 or less I believe.

Yikes! That might no grade at PCGS and NGC. But I would say it's net grade is MS-60 or 61 at ANACS (And for the others if they don't BB it). For me, I would net it MS-60.
  • Hey eagle7, your right on the money! I have one almost identical to this and PCGS gave it a 62! The cut on mine may be just a little shorter.

A really nice coin but for the one mark, a good strong strike on all the stars, great fields - I'd say a prime candidate for strong PCGS64 without the mark, probably a 62 with it.

As long as the luster is nice it's a nice (real nice....in fact) MS62.

  • image Thanks WallStreetMan. I learned the hard way about how PCGS grades gold. Got pretty good at it and made some good money buying raw gold from an ole time dealer who never used slabs. He is gone now. I made the mistake of going into modern proof sets in the DCAM craze but Im back to gold now. I love it and I feel comfortable with being able to grade it. One of the coins I bought from him was a five indian, 1908-D which he had in an au box. The obverse was a solid ms65 and the reverse just as good except for a staple scratch which was immediately noticible without magnification. I sent it in to PCGS anyway and they ms63'd the thing. It was lovely. Ive never seen another five indian with such a nice skin on both the obverse and reverse. Oh well! I made a ton of money on that coin anyway.

I think it gets no grade at PCGS & NGC. Net grade AU at some of the other services IMO. The scratches size, location and depth are HUGELY distracting. Maybe you can get it attributed as the new 'Scarface' variety. Most unfortunate.

  • image PCGS and NGC will certainly slab this coin if there is no hairlining on it. I cant tell that from the photograph. Darktone if you submit this coin, let us know what it grades.

  • My scanner is down or I would send a scan! Man, this looks like mine! I will see if I may have a picture. Congratulations on the $ coin, this is what makes up for the losers!

Sorry guy's this is not my coin( I sure wish it was though!). It's in the upcoming B&M rarities auction. It's graded MS64 by PCGS. I was thinking ms63 money as I would think it just has too much eye appeal for 62 money but in my opinion that mark is just too big for ms64 money. mike
  • Maybe I should resubmit mine, no, Im not a crackout kind of guy! No service is perfect, and these crackout guys are the ones who make the services look bad! Get rid of all the undergraded coins and leave the overgrades, what does this do to the credibility? I say we hang the CRACKOUT GUYS!

  • Darktone,
Why would you want to own such a coin? I am curious. It is a beauty BUT that gash is too much for me.

Figure you could get nice coins for similar money why park a tidy sum in a problem coin? Of course there are exceptions like a chain cent or 1916-d merc but this coin is not that.

Whoever damaged this coin should never know a day of rest! May the coin gods curse him/her forever. Looks deliberate to me.

    Thanks for sharing.
  • image Dont crack that one out and send it to PCGS unless you are B&M. You will be greatly disappointed. There is no way that coin is worth 64 money. No way. Pay low end 63 if you like but that is it. Sad and mad at the grading services. Shame!

  • Nothing pisses me off more than a guy who says, "Im going to see if I can get this problem coin put into a PCGS slab"! What does this say about that person?

Wow. I'd have never imagined PCGS putting this one in a 64 holder. They must see it as a high 66 without the gash, and to me there are other marks on the bust that would make the 66 a stretch. Oh well. If I were PCGS, I wouldn't want it in my 64 holder (imagine getting this jewel on a sight-unseen purchase!).

DesertLizard, I would be happy to own this coin but not for 64 money! Even with that mark it is a nice coin in my opinion. I am not looking to buy it but I rather thought it would be a good coin for discussion and to hear other's opinions on a coin with damage but otherwise a very nice coin. I do own a few damaged and cleaned coins and these coins have a place in my collection too( you gotta see my 1877 indian cent! It's just awfulimage). mike
