has anyone here not living in california, florida or any state with annual major coin shows planned

for someone living in longbeach or in florida going to a major coin show doesn't take much time, effort, or expense [untill you buy something that is] but if you live in a part of the country where major coin shows very seldom if ever come within hundreds of miles of you [not talking about small local shows with less than 100 tables] have you ever planned a vacation to coincide with a major national coin show? i've heard that the reaction of the larger dealers that came to minneapolis for the central states show in may of 2000 were for the most part dissapointed and don't want central states to ever come back to minnesota. if this is true the only way i'm ever going to make it to a national show again is to travel to a national show either planned for in a vacation or to coincide with a trip to visit family in california. if your in my situation, have you ever done that as a vacation idea and if you did, how did it go?

I would suggest not doing the family vacation around a coin show. They won't like it and you will have too many distractions. I live in Northern IN and traveling to FUN, cost was only a little over $200 for flights and the room is $59 a night. Leave the family behind. image

Yes, the Baltimore show in November, and the CSNS show last year in Columbus. OH. I will be going to the CSNS in Cinncinati this year too. There is an old cemetary in Cinnci that has a great selection of trees. Some real nice specimens. As long as you don't mind a few ghosts.image mdwoods

P.S. I would have gone to the upcoming FUN show, but I am in the process of selling coins so that I can buy some different ones.image

  • My wife and I have plans for the ANA show in Baltimore this July. since we have kids in D.C. and MD., this is a no brainer. We also have best friends in the Pittsburgh area, so will most likely attend the ANA show there in 2004. It is only a 3-5 hour trip each direction for us from SE Ohio.image

  • Barberlover,
Just to let you know, my family has arranged vacations around Coin Shows for many years. We lived in SC and traveled to ANA in Baltimore in 93, Portland in 98, Chicago '99, Atlanta in '00, and have been to the last 2 FUN shows, (the 3rd being this week). Of course my dad and I have collected (the last 3 years being dealers, but not setting up at these shows) and my mom has happily joined in. If your means permit you, I'd recommend going solo if the family hates coins, but you can always spend a day at the show while the family shops or something...
It's just a thought. And no offense, but I doubt I would make it to a major show in Minnesota if it was cold, but I might in the summer... Pardon my ignorance, but is there anything to see up there?
    Hope this helps,
    John

Sort of. I'm taking my leftover 2002 vacation and going to the ANA money show in Charlotte in March. I'm also taking the grading class and spending time with my brother while I'm there. So I guess you can say that I planned it around the event. Of course, it's a bit convenient for me since I have to take any rollover vacation before March 31. image

about the only thing i've heard of in minnesota as far as landmark reasons to come here are the many lakes we have and the mega mall in blomington about 10 or 15 miles south of minneapolis. maybe lack of tourist attractions is part of the reason we can't get major coin shows up here in north country!!!

Although I attend all the major shows in the north-east, where I live, my wife and I also visit my in-laws for a week in January each year so that I can attend each day of FUN.

I live in the Boston area and went to the ANA in New York with my wife. I'm also going to FUN next week. Plan on doing some golfing with my friend who is going and could care less about coins.
  • I did for the CNA show in Vancouver, BC this last summer. Next on the list is the Portland ANA.

I haven't, but I plan to take at least a week's vacation for the Portland, OR ANA convention. I wish the ANA would have more shows on the West coast, as the number of ANA shows held in the Eastern portion of the United States are very disproportionate to those held in the Western portion.
