Franklin Question!!!

I have never bought a Franklin before but decided to spend a few dollars on a proof one here recently. The seller that sold it said it was spotless but it's not. His digital images were perfectly adjusted to hide all this. It's nice and everything but has a couple of flaws.

Obverse

Reverse

The first is the huge fingerprint right behind his head, mark on cheek.

The question is why the nick on the reverse has a small blueish circle around it? Is it normal for the surfaces on a proof Franklin to look like sand paper when looking at it under 16x magnification?

How would I go about removing the finger print on the obverse without causing the spot on the reverse to get worse?

  • Hi Mike. Fortunately you are not out more than $3 or $4.........at least I hope not. You could do what most bullion traders do with this type of bullion material......melt it down and make a nice spoon or two.

I don't know what that spot is, hard to say that a dip would make it worse... A quick dip may remove the finger print..... What did you pay for this......

Yeah right! Melt it down....... Many of the Franklins in the Proof issues had milk spots.... But I'm not sure what yours is.....

  • Looks more like a boil!!!! Does this mark really hurt the grade or is it gradable??

I think it will hurt the grade..... I cant tell from the scan, but it could knock it to a pr65....maybe a pr66.... Then this also depends how the graders are feeling on any given day....

  • My friend, if you try to get this thing in a holder, your $6.50 investment will turn into a $40 mistake. DON'T do it! You got a pretty good deal. I was just kidding about the $3 or $4. Lucy, you sure do know your Franklin halves. Do you collect ANY other series?
  • hmmm well they are over there in Cal. and I'm in VA. and I am not sure where charles is or if he is.......

  • Na, I'm not if it would have been spotless like the seller said then yea but I guess I will put it up on ebay raw just like I got it.

  • Hey, maybe you are a cool kitty from hepcat city afterall. I don't really like any of those modern series (nor slabs), but I do like reading your opinions on the forum and the fact that you have a diversified collection. As time goes on, I would like some of you modern collectors to please explain what a "registry set" is. Ed
  • Hey I took a tissue and and removed that spot and the fingerprintimage With no traces left behind...

I'm hoping it won't be from you, but there could be a reaction on the coins surface after being wiped with a tissue.....
