Lucy and the 48 Franklin.

Here is the Obverse of a 48p Frankie that I bought for $15 dollars.

The toning on this coin is nicer then the scan, which doesn't show the luster that comes thru the toning. As you can see there are some hits on Frankies shoulder and hair and some tiny ones on his face. The fields are very clean on the Obverse. This looks like a ms64, though I am hoping that it can sneak into a 5 with the help of the mint set toning.....

The Reverse has some very nice toning that again isn't captured by this scan. You can see some hits on the Bell and the right upper set
of bell lines. The Reverse I have as a 65. I have seen many a 66 with these type of hits on the Bell. I also want to piont out that when viewing the coin these hits are not as bad as what you see on the scan. The fields are super clean on the Reverse.

This coin is going to be sent in for Grading, I am calling it a SURE FIRE MS64FBL! I am hoping to get lucky and get a 5, but I don't believe there to be enough wear or rub to get any lower then a 64.

It looks like you've got 3 dings across the bell lines image

A 65 would be a nice return on your investment. Good Luckimage

  • Good luck Lucy. I hope you get your grade! image
  • Question from an ignorant newbie...would this really get FBL with those three dings and the gash on the right side of the bell lines?

So far I am 100% on FBL's, yes I believe that this will go FBL, Pcgs will focus on the lower lines. There can be some tiny non distracting niks that don't totally disrupt and break the lines......

  • I didn't know the bottom lines were more important or scrutinized more closely. Thanks for the info.
  • MS64 may or may not get FBL Lucy. The obverse is definitely 64 shot 65, but the reverse kills you. If it does get FBL the reverse takes you down one notch. As I understand it Karen, in order to receive FBL designation the lines have to be uninterrupted from edge to edge - with the exception of the crack on the bell. Now - PCGS has been grading only the bottom three lines of the bell lines, so that's where Lucy might get her FBL designation, as long as the dings to the right and left of the bottom bell lines are not so sever that they interrupt the bell line. As for the hits on the upper right quadrant of the bell lines, well - to me that would knock this coin out of gem contention. Nice catch for $15, but not total gem quality.

It is hard to find them, but they are out there... I need some help from the Grading Gods at PCGs... This coin also has very nice eye appeal in person which I hope will swing things in my favor.....
