<< <i>Nothing against Franklin himself, that's for sure...but the coin is one of the ugliest ever issued by the US mint. Other front runners are the Ike dollar and the Kennedy half. The first two mentioned have very little going for them in the obverse design - very bald, very little detail. The last is just plain cliche. No artistic merit for any of them. >>
To Coppercoins, Clark of Kent, and anyone else who think's Franklins are boring and ugly
Beg to differ:
Franklins have style, they can be beautiful coins, it's an accessible set to many (there are more completed Franklin sets in the registry than any other established series), it can have numerous variants and numerous condition rarities, it has toning, it has bright white coins, it was the last full silver series.... In short - Sorry - you knocked on the wrong door!

Nice!

I see a montage of Franklins like this, and it brings out the lunch in me!
Just kidding, of course!

What idiot are you quoting there?
That one in the first row, right side looks awfully familiar.
Where have I seen it before?
Nice post Frank!

Looking for Nationals, Large VF to AU type, 1928 Gold, and WWII Emergency notes. Also a few nice Buffalo Nickels and Morgan Dollars.
Monty...
<< <i>What idiot are you quoting there? >>
That "idiot" would be me, and the last time I checked people were allowed to make opinionated statements here. I made that statement because it's what I believe, and I'm not about to apologize for it. The three series designs mentioned don't hold a shred of artistic merit to most other designs the mint released. Exactly how stating my opinion on the matter makes me an idiot bewilders me. Actually why I even bother with this forum in the first place bewilders me. How about you grow up and stop taking other people's opinionated statements about a coin series so personally.

Coppercoins, you are entitled to your opinion, of course. Don't you dare apolgize for it. Just let the others' opinions and nasty names roll off'a ya.

<< <i>I think your the one who should grow up Coppercoins! You slam'd me bad in the Frankie thread, just like you always have slam'd slab'd coins ever since you have come to this forum. I didn't retaliate against Lincoln cents..... Your wording is strong, maybe you should tone it down! >>
I'm sorry, I must have forgotten what thread I slammed you in. I can't seem to find it.
Slabbed coins? Well, that's a difference of opinion as well, and all of my statements are opinions. If you don't like them, there's no need to read them.
Lincoln cents? Nobody ever said I collect them because I like the way they look. I think the memorial reverse design is right up there on the top of the list as one of the ugliest ever released...and what the mint has done to VDB's obverse design has completely discredited it as a work of art. So now what am I doing? Slamming myself? No, I'm simply stating an educated opinion based on a lifetime of being an artist myself. I am giving an opinion on the merits of a design, not on the collecting habits of any individual. You're taking the whole thing wrong, and the oly thing I responded to here today was someone calling me an "idiot" and your post in defense of the coins you collect...I don't defend the Lincoln cent, that would be stupid. It's not worth honorable mention in the artistic department. I collect them because they are interesting, not because they are necessarily "beautiful". For the better part, one must go to foreign lands to find "beautiful" works of art in coins - the US lost it years ago.
If you take offense to my statements, I apologize for your oversensitivity - nothing I have said is put forth in an attempt to offend anyone. It is more an honest opinion based on my training and talent in art. That and my passion for collecting coins in a purist manner and sharing that which I have come to know about them are completely different subjects.

It figures....It was what was quoted to begin this thread.

True and too bad you don't have the tact that DorkKarl has on this subject........ You make you opinions very strong and I know other members feel this way, but I 'll only speak for myself.
<< <i>If you take offense to my statements, I apologize for your oversensitivity >>
Hmmm.... Then I apologize for your obnoxious attitude for Franklins and people that collect slab'd coins.

Would that be a put down artist?

DCAMFranklin is playing you guys like a fiddle. As he has been the last few days, rolling gleefully in the garbage threads. And I would have told him that privately if he didn't (unsurprisingly) have all his contact info turned off.
Sheesh. We finally get a post from a collector enthusiastically sharing his coins and 15 minutes later it's a bickering match.
Edited : statement intended for Lucybop.

Coindaughter hints at a good point. Important people should be commemorated and coins are one of the best ways to do so (just as the Romans did). But commemoratives should last for a period of no more than say 10 years or so. After which, they may rightfully be depicted as ugly if that is the case. Who wants to look at the same picture of a man for 95 years?
Let's bring back some of the beautiful examples like the 1853 half reverse.
I do find it ironic that you state, "....my statements are opinions. If you don't like them, there's no need to read them." Yet, on another thread you are saying you are leaving the Forum due to some threads you don't care for. I'm truly not being a smart***, however, I have to ask why don't you follow your own advice? Don't read the opinions on those threads. Understand this though. If you are a buyer of the particular coins being offered by a particular seller, you MAY want to know about that seller's previous business practice. You might want to know how that seller treats his customers. Just a thought. With that said, let me be one of many to suggest you continue to come to the Forum and participate as often as you feel comfortable. I've enjoyed your past participation and I hope to learn from your future participation.

Apology accepted....really.
My response was primarily based on the fact that I stated an opinion about a coin series (not a person, collector, or otherwise) - actually three series of coins and the mint's lack of being able to live up to the precedent started in the 18th century that climaxed in the early 20th century, then steeply fell off into an abyss of "plastic" designs. After making such an observation, people responded in a manner that would make you think I was talking about their own mother, not a coin design. I'm not attacking the collectors here, I'm commenting on the lack of artistic quality in a coin design for Pete's sake.
I felt it was time that I step in and set the record somewhat straight, considering my words started the thread.
Regarding my other thread about letting things calm down around here...it's a completely different issue altogeter. No fewer than four threads started and continue with people rashly slinging mud at each other, letting the words of a few fuel the fire. Meanwhile, threads with useful information in them get washed off the page. I didn't read all the pepperwhatever posts, I didn't care to. I don't know the story, nor do I care to. All I saw was at least half a dozen this, that, and the other threads that were washing the decent "informative" threads of the screen.
It all boils down to this being a defense against a personal attack (which is now over) versus general mudslinging and namecalling. Two different things. If someone were to say something about how ugly and disinteresting the Lincoln cent was, I would say nothing. If asked, I would say that's their opinion - entitiled. In fact, with modern cents in mind, I actually agree with them. Thing is, I'm not about to take personal offense over a coin series. You see?

And I have never said anything about it till you and your arrogant ways. CoinGuy1 has publicly made fun of Frankies and I thought his posts were very charming, ClarkOf Kent has slam'd me on Frankies as well, but his wasn't as cold as yours and he has had me laughing about his humor over Franklins. He even posted a picture of a Frankenstien once! Many members here have taken shots at the Franklins, but they didn't come off to me as you do, just as you do with slab'd coins on a forum where many collect slab'd coins. I am not dumb enough to realize that many will dispise Franklins, all the better for me to find them...... But your wording got to me.....
