Checked Out the Coins in the Museum in Hartford

Unfortunately, many of the coins look like they are either frighteningly original or have been horribly mishandled over the last 100 years - I'm not sure which.

Most of the Mass silver appears to devoid of wear, but all of it has toned to a color somewhere between burnt umber and road tar black. Actually, they're not unattractive - just totally different than 99% of the Mass silver seen on the market which I assume means that the 99% you do see has been dipped in tarnish remover as recently as last Thursday.

The apparently unc. 1794 dollar is unfortunately unattractively toned / spotted in a blotchy pattern. Ditto the unc. 1794 50c peice. As are most all of the other deluxe high end silver pieces.

The only things in the case that look numismatically (as opposed to historcially) good are a MS 1806 half cent in virtually full red unc., a great AU - unc. 1793 half cent, similar Wreath Cent and a great trio of Continental Dollars - two MS64/5ish examples in pewter and a decent XF/AU example in brass - plus most of the gold was quite nice.

If you've never seen an ultra high relief St. Gaudens in person I'd recommend it. It was a thoroughly moving experience.
