Great thread on the 55 D/D Mark But what about the...........................

1995 D/D.I have a couple questions.
How many were minted.
What caused them.
Is it true the mint took action to prevent that type of doubling from happening again.
Although the doubling is less severe on the 95 as compared to the 55 were do you see the value of these going.

I think thats all for now.image

    MAULUMALL,

I think that some of your questions were answered in the thread already.

The 1995's are very common and unspectacular - I remember when they were first discovered and all of the hoopla over them. Then, I started seeing them in (roll) quantities while I worked at NGC. I was sure disappointed with the new so-called doubled dies ! I think they saw their best days, value-wise long ago and don't expect them to perform well from here.

    Stewart, you said:

"HOW MANY DO YOU WANT TO BUY ?

ANY AU OR UNC GRADE YOU WANT"

I couldn't find any AU's on either the PCGS or NGC pop report. Do you have some in holders that are not showing up on the pop reports or were you exaggerating mightily to make a point? image

PS - Upon further examination, a number of lower UNC grades were absent from the reports, as well. image

I made some R/B late date Lincolns that aren't in the pop report. They were slabbed for their color or my stupidity, not grade.

As for AU 1995 DDOs, they are out there, but maybe not slabbed. I see them offered every once in a while.
  • thanks for the great thread, i have always wondered what was going on with the 95 double die.
  • sorry, wrong post
  • The 1995 DDO cent is a Class V doubled die (pivoted hub doubling.) The Cherrypickers' Guide gives a reasonable explanation on how it probably occurred. I mentioned in the other thread on the 1955 DDO how the mint began using lugs to prevent that kind of dramatic doubling from occurring again. The CG says that one or more of the notches can become clogged with grease or some other foreign substance, which will not allow the lugs to enter properly, causing a "pivot" on the lug that did enter properly. It could also be caused by a lug chipping away, allowing for a similar pivot.

The 1995 DDO occurred before the mint began using the single squeeze method. It's highly unlikely that you'll see any DDO's now. Not impossible, but virtually nil. There is also a 1995D DDO with strong doubling on IGWT and to a lesser degree on the date, mint mark (hub added) and LIBERTY.

The estimated rarity for the 1995 is URS 20 (250,001 to 500,000 known) and for the 1995D it's URS 6(17 to 32 known.) image
