Non-1943 steelie?

My dad told me yesterday that his boss purchased a steelie minted (he thought, but wasn't sure) in 1944. Said they were extraordinarly rare, etc., and that it had been authenticated (but he didn't say by whom).

Do such coins exist? Anyone know the population? Or approximate value?

Regards,

Not near my reference materials at the moment but I seem to recall that there are a handful of 1944 steelies in existance.

Yep, they exist and I've held one. A local dealer has/had one. I think he said total mintage was about 19, making it more rare then the 43 copper. But, it doesn't have a huge premium that the copper does.

  • From David Lange's "Complete Guide To Lincoln Cents:"

1944P Steel: "only 27 examples are confirmed as genuine."
1944D Steel: "likely that no more than 10 are known..."
1944S Steel: "This issue is of the greatest rarity and is probably unique."

This would be as of 1996. image
  • What would a 1944 Steelie be worth? Were they made in other years? I seem to remember having one when I collected coins as a child in the 1960's but I am not sure if it was a 1944. I hope my parents didn't throw out the books with the coins.
  • Justin, In 43 they started making Lincolns out of steel(they needed the copper for war purposes), a few can be found in copper. In 44 they went back to copper but a few can be found in steel!
