NGC vs PCGS on gold grading - Quarter Eagles

Folks,

Question on NGC with gold. Are they typically on the mark relative to PCGS or are they a grade or two higher? I'm looking at a few NGC gold quarter eagles and I thought I would gather some prior experience prior to jumping in on this one. The quarter eagle I'm looking at is a NGC 11D in MS61. Some of the details look flatter (i.e. a rub) and I'm thinking it is more like a AU58, not a MS61. Comparing it to the PCGS coins I have in the same series (61 to 64) it doesn't seem to measure up.

  • Rich,

Some of NGC's lower end gold I have had crossed to PCGS in the MS-61 to AU-58 scenario like you suggest. But I have also seem a lot of NGC gold that is comparable to PCGS' material. Would suggest that you evaluate the coins on a coin-by-coin basis.

I crossed an NGC Saint with no problem. From NGC MS64 to PCGS MS64.

  • Thanks for the feedback. I really liked the coin and regardless of crossing or not I will keep it. The luster looks great and the eye appeal is their too. Afterall, it is just an opinion by PCGS right image

  • I collect the same series. I find discreptancies(My opinion) in grades for both companies, but NGC tends to discount the rub on the upper outside wing and provides a better grade then a coin might warrant.

On the other hand, PCGS might disregard a bag mark or field nick that NGC would knock the coin down a little for (Sorry for ending in a preposition).

I would say though that both are pretty close...The probelm comes when you send in to be crossgraded....PCGS is not very liberal.

If you don't like the coin in question, don't get it, no matter the slabber.

  • It is the coin first, the holder is gravy. I was just looking to see if it was worth the money to send it to PCGS knowing the crossover percentage. It does have the eye appeal and no marks, just some weakness in the strike (hence the 61). Either way this (quarter) eagle has a new nest.

It really shouldn't be a "gamble" at all. It is what it is...you can tell right away if the coin is AU. In all but the 1908-P, you can look at the top portion of the eagles wing for wear. The 1908 had a die problem where the coin looks AU but it is just lacking in details near the top of the wing...right in the same place the coin wears, unfortunately.

As far as grading services go, I KNOW that there are many crappy $5 Indians in NGC holders. A "glut" of them is a better word. I've heard there was a hoard sent to NGC at one time but I've never verified that. But the $2.5 series is easier to find nicer coins so maybe the grading is better....

Also, I'd like to point out that even if it's AU58 it could end up being a nicer coin than a 63....
