Lucy and Franklin collectors- How's this one?

braddickbraddick Posts: 23,974 ✭✭✭✭✭
I've never collected Franklins before other than the odd rainbow toned 1958 but have found them to be interesting coins, nonetheless. I've been reading Lucy's various Threads and posts on the series and find myself drawn to them more and more. I'm even thinking of putting together a set of the proofs (not for a Registry, mind you- that would be a bit too pricey).
Doops offered this one at a great price (on another Thread) and I had to take advantage of it.
What do you think?

Again, I'm not super big on the Franklins, but know enough that the earlier ones (pre-55) are somewhat scarce with any contrast. Also, I think spots plague these early ones too, right?
Anyway, I'd appreciate your opinions and suggestions for future Franklins. Also, what to watch out for in this series.

I think that is a very nice coin! This one really looks atleast cam!!!! I don't know if this has been cracked and resubmitted but, I think I may try that one. It really looks like a strong cam. I think you paid a fair price for this coin..

    Hi Braddick,

I think you got a pretty good deal on it at $200.

My thoughts on Proof Frankies are these:

DCAM Franklin's with heavy frost are among the most stunning coins ever minted! I have a few that have a awesome black and white look to them.

The early years are tough and expensive to find in good grades without milkspots or toning. And a 50 in any kind of Cam is a high ticket item, just as the 59 is.

On my PR68's, the fields are very clean, no spotting or hairlines...... On a pr67 I have there is some very tiny spots.... Hairlines seem to get the grade down into a pr66 and usually lower.

The 59 is the Holy Grail of Proof Frankies in DCAM! Search for it, I have been looking for a long time.....

Looks decent. Can you return it if you don't like it?

I've heard that about the 59.
I also would much rather have a PR67DCAM from the sixties than even one in straight (no cam) PR69.

You're right about that black and white contrast. Very attractive on these coins!

  • Braddick- Glad to see you have developed an appreciation for the beauty of the Cameo/DCAM Franklins. I really think you will be happy to own some. I hate to disagree with Lucy, however, I've seen too much displeasure with Ol'Pepperdoodles' miracle camera work. I don't doubt the level of Cameo on that reverse. However, I'm extremely confident you will receive that coin and find the obverse to be a very light cameo. It is a PCGS PR-66, with a nice reverse.

Teetelli had some awesome DCAM Franklins of various dates at auction a couple of weeks ago and it would have been nice if you could have picked one of those coins up for your budding collection. His scans were poor and the coins were much nicer than portrayed in his auctions. Good luck with your future acquisitions!

I was also concerned about those images, they sure make that half look like a solid cam..........

Just go and look at the pics that were on Segoja's '56. You look at that obverse and tell me you would expect a 5, on a scale of 1 to 10, for level of cameo contrast?

So, why was Pepperdoodles forwarding Greg's e-mails to you?

I had seen you bidding on those. I choose to keep it secret.

I did look at the pics of the 56, I can see why Segoja bought it. Those pics made for a really nice coin. I would love to see that coin in person.

I haven't a clue. I think he was trying to prove to me that the people here are bad people. Which if everyone here is a bad bunch of whiny babies, I don't care, I still love all of you!
