Has Anyone ever gotten anything graded MS67 or higher by PCGS, that came from a Roll ??

Just curious, because I have not had any and have looked at 300 rolls (Morgans, Ikes, & Wash Silver quarters) over the past 5+ years.

If so, what was it ?

  • BTW, I have had many MS65s, 3 or 4 MS66's (2 of which were Ikes) but no MS67's.

Yes. It was a 2000-P Sac.

  • Sacs and SBAs, and a bunch of Lincoln wheaties. Some Roosevelts.

One MS67 that appeared to be a bag coin, though I didn't pull it myself (bought in a 2x2).
  • DHeath -

Off topic - but question please - regarding your signature line.

I'll go along with you about the term peso being used to describe the Spanish 8 reale coin. Peso was a colloquialism for Real de a Ocho or pieces of eight. But the P & S or the word peso was never used on a coin until 1817. Many folks think that perhaps that was the source for the dollar sign $.

But were you aware - and this cannot be proven - it is more likely that the source for the dollar sign evolved from a particular mint mark on some of these 8 reale coins - that of Potosi. This mint mark was composed of a P - T - S & I all superimposed over one another. And when seen - this mint mark looks very much like the $. An example can be viewed - 8 o'clock left picture - Potosi mint mark

Great image, and I agree that is a likely source. I appreciate the pic.

  • With all the excitement over the past few days. not sure if everyone had a chance to see this one.

The only two coins series to have been graded MS67 or higher that came from a roll are, Sacs and SBAs.

Looks like MS66 may the "line of demarkation" for coins coming from rolls. Anyone else with MS67s or higher ?
    Franklins/Kennedies ?

I have not submitted much so my numbers are lower. But I have had one MS-67 Sac from a roll. And 3 MS-66 JFKs, one that I think could be a 67 but I do not know. I have had 5 or 6 MS-66RD cents as well. Outside of that, all of my higher grade slabs are purchased.

I have made over a hundred brilliant and some end roll toned Roosevelt Dimes in MS67. Also funny enough I made two MS68 1976s Silver Washington Quarters from a roll I bought at FUN last year, for $80. Granted I know these weren't originally meant to be placed in rolls, but I thought it was funny that after being transported to the show and who knows where before that and being shipped back to CA, two coins still MS68'd.

  • Not too long ago I passed on an original roll of 53 S Franklins. The roll sold for $535, what are the chances of getting a 65 or 66? What do you think of the price?

  • While Im asking, how about FBL?

  • Morris,

Wow, you got the lead so far ... hundreds of Roosies, which I assume that either (1) the were recent year (1999 to 2002) clads or (2) you looked at hundreds/thousands of rolls. Well done on the silver Washingtons, as they generally need to be nick free to be at the PCGS MS68 level. Actually, I have 2 of them (out of the 74 currently graded) so there is a 4% chance that one of mine is one of the two you had graded.

    Wallstreetman,

Up until the last few months, if my older price lists are correct, you could have gotten 53s rolls of Franklins for $400 or so. Not sure if you would have been fortunate for a MS65 or MS66 FBL. They are tough, given their very high prices and their combined pop of 19 (in MS65FBL & MS66FBL).

I have had many, many coins graded MS-67 and a few MS-68 coins from rolls. Mostly Kennedy Half Dollars and State Quarters. You have to get luck in getting nice rolls and have the patience to look at a lot of coins.

I thought the $ sign came from the right pillar on the "Pillars of Hercules" on the 8 reales. Looking at that mintmark it does look like it could have come from that.

Wallstreetman-Chances of getting MS-65 coins from a roll of 53-S Halves is very high. The 53-S halves probably have the highes % of 65 coins than any date. Chances of an MS-66 coin small. Chances of a full bell line-I'd say just about 0%.

I know of many state quarters that have been graded this high from rolls. I think the owner of the number one set even had a 69 come from a roll.

  • Ok, to summarize again, we have had the following PCGS graded at MS67 and MS68, that came from rolls:
    Lincoln Wheat 1c in MS67
    Roosies (assume clad) in MS67
    Wash 76s Silver 25c in MS68
    Wash State Quarters in MS67 & MS68
    Kennedy 50c in MS67 (also assume MS68, right Jay/Numish ?)
    SBA $1 in MS67
    SAC $1 in MS67

  • Got a 2000-D Lincoln slabbed MS68 Red by PCGS. Bought the roll from the clerk at Autozone right before she busted on the register to give me change.

FYI for everyone...There are several dealers who specialize in buying big roll deals, going thru them, sending the best coins to PCGS, then blowing off the rest. These guys send us thousands of coins. They get 68s every now and then (I assume you're talking about pre-1965 coins). I believe that 68s come from two places: these big roll deal bulk submissions and the occassional super cherry someone finds.

For post-1965 coins, actually post-1985, there seems to more 68s made. But I will say that large submissions of post 1965 coins are a recent development, and large submissions of post 1985 coins (non-proofs) only started this year.

  • I screwed up my previous post --- was supposed to say:

One MS67 Ike that appeared to be a bag coin, though I didn't pull it myself (bought in a 2x2).
  • Supercoin,

    Appreciate the update (excellent find!!!)
