1948 Franklin

Considering sending this Franklin to NGC. Would like to get a little feedback from you. Mainly wondering what you think about the color. It's been in a Kraft 2x2 envelope for a couple years and has developed some nice toning. Would NGC body bag it? It has a great strike with FBL (both bottom and top). Pass and Stow is clear as a bell (no pun intended).

GENERALLY speaking, NGC grades bell lines tougher, but also is a little more relaxed on overall grade for the coin in my opinion. With a gem like the one you appear to have, there is no question on the bell lines, so there's no need to have anyone put their stamp of approval on them - they're there for the world to see. Now the question becomes overall grade. In my opinion, if you're able to get the MS65FBL, or even an MS66FBL, you'll be ahead of the market by maybe as much as 20% than if it were in an NGC holder - doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but that's the way it is. In my experience the grade NGC assigns is almost always equal to half a grade below. Hence the market kinda reacts to their slabs in this manner - at least with Franklins.

Several months ago I bought a nice little collection that included fifty plus assorted Mint State and Proof Jefferson 5C, Roosevelt 10C and Washington 25C along with a few Franklin and Kennedy 50C that (I know) had spent the last 30 years in 2X2 Kraft envelopes. I submitted the entire group to PCGS and all of them graded between 65 and 67! Only one coin was returned in a body bag -- a 1963 Proof Jefferson 5C with gorgeous rainbow toning, which I resubmitted for review. It was ultimately graded PR66 and I sold it to Toningintheblood. The rest of the coins have been dispersed on eBay. Now to my point -- many of the coins had coloration very similar to your 1948 half-dollar so I would go for it. I hope this info helps.

Regardless of what the plastic eventually reads, it is still a very nice coin and should command a premium over whatever grade the grading service determines.
