1948 Franklin

Considering sending this Franklin to NGC. Would like to get a little feedback from you. Mainly wondering what you think about the color. It's been in a Kraft 2x2 envelope for a couple years and has developed some nice toning. Would NGC body bag it? It has a great strike with FBL (both bottom and top). Pass and Stow is clear as a bell (no pun intended).

I think the color is nice.........has good eye appeal in my opinion. how many lines are supposed to be on Frankies? It looks like the left hand end of the very top line is missing, but I'm no expert.

It looks like a super strike which is very typical for a 48. I love this coin, I see a few little hits but I wouldn't be surprised at this coin getting a 65 or even sneek into a 6. As for the toning........Its hard to say if it will get body bagged. It looks original to me and a coin this nice, send it in. Keep us updated on it.

  • I think that it is a super looking coin, even though I shy away from toned coins. Great strike!

  • That's a screamer - very good toning on that piece - I wouldn't send it to NGC - it's a sure fire MS65FBL if not better as Lucille mentions - Send it to PCGS, you'll be glad you did when it comes time to sell.

The more I am involved in this forum the more I'm liking toned coins! Nice coin! I hope you get the grade!

Boy, they hammered the hell out of that one! Great strike. They would be 'bag of hammers' dumb to body bag it. Toning looks fine.

  • Thanks for your opinions. Frank, I've heard on this forum that NGC grades FBL's looking at both sets of lines and PCGS only grades FBL looking at the bottom lines. Why would PCGS graded FBL's demand more money?

Great coin, and attractive toning. PCGS should get a shot, as Frank mentioned earlier. They'll love it too, I'd think.

PCGs graded Frankies sell for more. This was very obvious at Long Beach. More collectors are willing to pay more for a PCgs coin. Is that saying that NGC coins are not worth it? By no means am I saying that, and the fact that PCG's Frankies command a higher premium doesn't mean its just. Thats just what the market is doing at this moment. I prefer PCGs due to my Registry set.

GENERALLY speaking, NGC grades bell lines tougher, but also is a little more relaxed on overall grade for the coin in my opinion. With a gem like the one you appear to have, there is no question on the bell lines, so there's no need to have anyone put their stamp of approval on them - they're there for the world to see. Now the question becomes overall grade. In my opinion, if you're able to get the MS65FBL, or even an MS66FBL, you'll be ahead of the market by maybe as much as 20% than if it were in an NGC holder - doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but that's the way it is. In my experience the grade NGC assigns is almost always equal to half a grade below. Hence the market kinda reacts to their slabs in this manner - at least with Franklins.

  • That's a real beauty! Wish it were mine. Great toning and a solid MS-65 FBL. Good luck with the submission! image
  • AKrick,

Several months ago I bought a nice little collection that included fifty plus assorted Mint State and Proof Jefferson 5C, Roosevelt 10C and Washington 25C along with a few Franklin and Kennedy 50C that (I know) had spent the last 30 years in 2X2 Kraft envelopes. I submitted the entire group to PCGS and all of them graded between 65 and 67! Only one coin was returned in a body bag -- a 1963 Proof Jefferson 5C with gorgeous rainbow toning, which I resubmitted for review. It was ultimately graded PR66 and I sold it to Toningintheblood. The rest of the coins have been dispersed on eBay. Now to my point -- many of the coins had coloration very similar to your 1948 half-dollar so I would go for it. I hope this info helps.

  • Wow!!! Great replies from all you guys and LUCY. I've never submitted any coins to PCGS because my main interest is Washington quarters and I have a NGC Registry Set. Perhaps it's time to take the dive and submit a few coins to PCGS. Thanks again!

  • What a nice clean Frankie with an intense strike, beautiful clean surfaces and awesome toning. I can't believe it hasn't been encased in plastic yet.

Regardless of what the plastic eventually reads, it is still a very nice coin and should command a premium over whatever grade the grading service determines.
  • Very nice strike. Agreed that it should go to PCGS for all the reasons stated above. The toning is superb and should not be a problem (I think!).

  • With all the positive replies I have received on the '48 and the unanimous opinion that it should be sent in to PCGS I have taken the plunge and signed up for the PCGS Gold membership (sorry NGC). As soon as my 4 free submissions arrive. off it goes. Stay tuned...
