Opinions on this bust dime

Amazing strike on this. What are the chances this will grade AU 53 by PCGS? Numismedia lists the retail price as $390 for that grade. I got it for $130. Am I missing something? Or will I be taking advantage of the seller's return policy? Opinions appreciated on the grade and price paid.

Thanks,
Casey

Could you be missing the fact that the pictures are of a half dime, not a dime?

  • Hey Casie, First of all don't get mad at me, the coins grade is probablly correct but it is a HALF DIME and not a BUST DIME, and list at numismedia in said grade at about $200.00

According to the seller, "light handling marks" limit the grade.........translation for me is cleaned/wiped au. I think your Numismedia value was for a dime, and not a half dime. $390 is extremely steep for an au half dime.
If the coin looks problem free up close, then you did ok. I bet it's got some hairlines on it though. I hope I'm wrong and good luck with it image

Wow - can't believe I overlooked that! image The price is more in line at least.

Placid - how do you post pictures like that? Haven't figured it out yet.

    Thanks for the comments.

I enlarged it 50% and put on my image host but if you want to put a picture from a ebay auction in a post just right click on the picture and choose properties and put that in the picture icon on this forum like you do for a link to a web page.

I would think the coin will not grade by PCGS, if it has a wipe mark they will call it cleaning and body bag. They were really tough on an 1809 bust half dollar I recently sent in. They cut no slack on coins two-hundred-years-old. Mine was body bagged!

Ahhh, Kolondike95, I bought a 1921 Peace $$ for a great price, and it went right back. He didn't even mention the hairlines from the cleaning it had. It was stated that it had been in a collection for 50 years. Well, sure, it was cleaned 51 years ago!

Sorry Casey, I'll bet you return this coin. But don't fret, he does return the your money and not too slow on the refund either, so you'll be okay.

Keep your eye out for this coin again. I bet if you return it, it'll be right back on Ebay like my 21 Peace. Funny thing, I've seen my coin sell 2 more times and 2 more times it was returned.

Got give him a A for effort though.

Without seeing it - except picture - looks like luster is gone (cleaned)

    probably bodybag PCGS

    Net AU details XF45 ANACS

half dime value is less than dime

value? picture could be deceptive ? $80-$120 ??

check FMV for 1834 half dime in XF
probably closer to what it is

    Casey,
From the pics, i give this piece cleaned xf...probably worth approximately what you paid unless
you see heavy hairlines on inspection,in which case, it's under a hundred dollar coin... in my opinion...

I have to agree with some of the last comments, Coin will not slab at PCGS IMO

    I would grade it a cleaned xf-45

Casey, I think your coin could be graded AU but I think you would almost have to have it in your to tell for sure. The 1834 half dime also has an overdate- the 1834 with an inverted three under the three. The inverted date is pretty common. Here's a picture of mine graded AU55 by PCGS for comparing. mike image

I hate buying raw coin off the net. you never know what you will get until the coin comes and if you have to return it you're tieing up your coin money. it is a nice looking scan if the coin is a problem free xf you have done ok. it don't look wipe or clean to me but bigd know more about that then I do. he has a good eye for these small coins.
