My first slabbed Morgan, and a coupla questions...

Ok, I don't collect Morgans. This is the result of one of those "I gotta bid on something" days. This is in a PCGS slab, green label.

Q1. The obverse & reverse both have a break in the finish on the high spots, very prominent on the reverse. Is this the infamous 'slider' wear? And, should this keep it from MS?

Q2. The rim toning on the reverse looks alot better in person. What flavor of toning is this? Album?

Q3. Ok... this makes it a few questions. Care to hazard a grade guess, even though it's just a scan?

Large scan - 167kb
Larger scan - 399kb

    MS64?
Give Blood (Red Bags) & Platelets (Yellow Bags)!
  • Your coin is MS. That appears to be a break in the lustre not any wear on the coin. I've only seen a few sliders in the morgan series myself, but the ones I've seen were more of a "weak strike vs rub" question and were most noticable over the ear. That would make a good thread topic if someone could post pics of their sliders.

    Definetlly Rim Tone.

    MS63

    Nice looking coin.

  • With the chatter on the cheek it looks MS63. Really like the rim toning. Let me know if your ready to sell it.

  • Clark:

Looks to be a nice quality MS64 piece. As for the toning, I haven't done all my reading yet, but my guess would be the begining of album toning.

I would have to go with a 64 also.
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

Can you get a real good close up of the date 1885? just curious if there was any traces of repunches on the 5 or the 85

It looks MS63 nice album toning on the rev. Nice coin. but the bag marks on rev and obv keep me from saying 64

  • MrK,

I also agree with Oak, but it's hard to tell about the cheek chatter. If it's light, it might be 64, otherwise I'd go with 63

Thats a pretty nice scan Clark i don't see any trace of doubling there. How does it look under the loupe?
Was curious about what was going on with the 8 next to the 5 the top loop i thought i seen some kind of double but it just looks like a dent of some sort Thanks for the close up.

  • MrK, Yeah, under the loupe I don't see anything. The surfaces around the date are consistent & unmarked.

    Man, these guys are good!

    Russ, NCNE
  • MrK,

If you're referring to the left side of the top loop on the second 8, under the loupe I can see that it's an after-market dent.

MS63 due to the severity of the hits on the the face and the ticks on the fields. The "rub" spots are from where it banged around with other coins in the 60lb bag it came in or the roll it was in, the tone is from the paper roll it was in. That's just a guess on the tone it could have got that way from a Dansco album or several different kinds of holders.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

Got any more like that to look at?
