ARTIFICIALLY, OR NATURALLY TONED...DIGITAL PICS

weld?

image

Hey, this IS coin related. This is how I pay for some of my coins. Here is something I picked up. Took the pics in the sunlight, wiped out the yellow and red, unfortunately. Artificial or natural?

I think the coin is natural.... But the weld job is very suspicious....

You've got to admit the weld is a beautiful mix of color. I got to do over 60 feet of that Christmas Day. Lucky me.

The jpeg compression makes it very difficult to determine. But I'll go tentatively with natural.
  • JC - Good to see you!

That strikes me as a natural pattern, and unusual for that particular coin which is a 21 S right? Tell us more about it!

Hope you and your family had a merry Christmas, Frank!

About the coin. 1921-S, ugly 30% cobalt blue-70% brown obverse with a fingerprint on the cheek. Too many bagmarks to bother slabbing. The reverse, however, is really fairly mark free, appears to be semi-prooflike, twice the luster that the obverse exhibits and just a nice variety of colors. The reverse sold me on the coin.

    Tig? Pretty smooth beads.
The Morg looks natural. Natural album or envelope tone. It would probably slab but I wouldn't call it original.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

Yessir, TIG. Was welding in machined areas that couldn't stand any spatter. 60 feet of weld all told, without one pinhole. Usually I find at least one pinhole in a batch of 15, with 4 feet of weld on each unit.

JC - the coin looks like it's in fairly good shape and there is plenty of luster to go around. Seems like a pretty nice catch for a 21S! Then again I kinda like splotch kinda morgans image

  • Frank,

Me too. I'll hang onto this for a year or so and pull it out now and again to look at, and then wind up selling it. Sorta like that 84-O. I am fascinated by the reverse. So...artificial or natural, I guess it doesn't make much difference. I liked it when I saw it under fluorescent lighting, and it looks MUCH better in natural lighting.

The obverse is a muddy dog, however.
