What type of error is this?

I've taken this coin to my local shop w/out luck on finding out it's error. I've researched the types of errors online too, with no luck. Was just wondering if any of you guys have any info on these types of errors. I'm sure the coin has added metal to it as both sides are raised up. I'm takin it to my dad's office to weight tommorow. The coin has NOT been altered though, there has been no smashing since the design on the actual coin is still perfect.

Heat was applied to this coin, it is not an indent or a cap.

Clads develop bubbles like that when they are heated. I highly doubt that could be a mint error - nearly 100%. I have seen plenty of these over time.

FC57: If a hammer was applied , then there is a high probability of the copper core being exposed
from the force of the shattering effect.

There's no way that coin is an example of hammering or tooling of any kind. Both surfaces are convex as opposed to a normal coin, thus expansion had to have taken effect. The only way to make a clad coin expand is to heat it.

lol That look with that reply is great Luce. hehe.

Also about the coin...Isnt it a bit worn for such an `error `to have circulated to that condition?
I guess it was heated to cause the bubbling.
  • It is obviously a transponder error! Scotty must have been asleep at the switch. image

Or, perhaps a failed cloning experiment of the Realians?

No? Ok, I'll go along with a DWBT*

It's not a defective die like the holder says. There is an error from trapped air in the planchet from a void in the rolling process that expands from the heat of striking but it's usually not as major as that. Plus you can still see the black around the devices where the the black didn't circulate off or wasn't cleaned off.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
