Antique coin cabinets

Can anyone help me? I am looking for any infomation I can get on old coin cabinets. The kind old time collections were kept in. I would very much like to get one for myself, but have only heard about them and have never seen a picture of one. Does anyone have any ideas on where to even start looking for one or a picture so that I could download and take with me to local antique shops. anytime I stop in one and ask about them all I get is a blank stare.

I own it. Want to buy it? Just kidding!

I grabbed the scans here. Resized them a bit to keep load times down.

if you really want more information on the classic american coin cabinet a cobinet used by most all of the collectors in the 1800's then get a copy of the amercian numismatic manual by dickerson c. 1859 1860 1863 the 1860 copy had this in it! so get that dated copy or a later edition as the first ed of 1859 might or might not have it in it!!

and in the back one of the last if not the last pages gives a really good photo of the cabinet that was the standard and used by many mid to late 1800's numismatists with a detailed description of the cabinet i am sure if you contaced the ana or ans they could make you a photo copy of the page and a photocopy of the descritpion page or as i remember it is all on one page? well i sold my copy 1860 of the book long ago when i disbanded my numismatic library holdings now i just keep more modern references which i sometimes use

if you do not have any luck with this in teo weeks pm me and i will go to a friends lib here in rochester and look it up for you in his books and send you a photocopy of all the cabinets in his ancient numismatic tomes

  • How much would anyone here be willing to pay for this?

My family has been in that antique furniture business since 1945. We have not seen one of these through the business, but we have an excellent cabinet maker that could very well make one.

Obviously it wouldnt be $100, but if there is some REAL interest, I could have him check those images, decide if he has the time. Then get a quote on its price...

Let me know a ballpark everyone thinks would be a decent price, and I will see what he can do...

It would be a very nice peice. Not fiber board and staples image

Obviously, after those pictures, I would love to have one too!

    JAMIE

ps. Also, list wants and other things that may not have been in a cabinet of yore. Also, dimensions would be nice to know about.

Actually, you need to have the cabinet made from Mahogany. Explanation and products can be found here on this British website Coin Cabinets Check out their other pages too because they have some really nice and unique stuff....Scott
  • I too have been buying antique furniture for over 20 years and have never seen one. I get many cabinets that would work for such a purpose, but I can't say I have seen one that I could say was made just for coin collections. I get such things as spool cabinets, apothecary cabinets, office cabinets with different size drawers, etc. If you have a specific size cabinet with approximate size drawers that you want, send me a PM and I can let you know if anything comes in. Most likely to find in either walnut, mahogany, or oak.

Those are really cool(no I'm not Jeremy!) Does anyone know the prices in $$$$$$$$$?
  • I posted this reply for TONEDDOLLARS in another forum - but for the benefit of those here that are interested also -

Well - I don't have a handle on any of the antiques right off - but there are still those who make them. Of course it would be wise to consider what Chippewa said. You should also consider what they used to call cabinet wear - slide marks produced on coins by their storage in these cabinets. But in modern day coin holders - this could be avoided. Don't know if the same can be said about certain toning effects. But the powder-coated metal ones should not have that problem.
