What do you consider Classical, Modern coinage to be?

To me, Classical is pre Morgan Dollar Coinage. Some of the Seated coins kind of overlap, but mostly I would call them Classical. Morgans, Barbers, Liberty Nickels I group in with the Early 20th Century coins. Then there are the Clad era coins. Franklins kinda fall in the end of the 2nd category , as do Silver Roseys and Washingtons. Jeffersons span the last 2 categories. I guess I have 3 basic categories for classifying coinage. mdwoods

Gee, it has been a while since we've beaten this particular dead horse!

Personally, I consider anything minted on a steam press to be "modern", while, of course, "classical" coinage would be Roman Imperial and Republican and ancient Greek coinage.

I guess that I would include Byzantine coinage in "classical", as well.

i think of classic coins as all that have dates 1933 and earlier...i think of coins with dates 1934 and later as modern coins...

1932, except Mercuries, Buffalos and Walkers through 1947 get a special exemption and are deemed "classics". Well, on second thought silver quarters through 1964 are beginning to look like "classics" these days image Wondercoin.

  • To me it's kinda like the Time zone line - it darts and dodges

    Lincoln Wheat - Classic
    Lincoln Memorial - Modern
    Buffalo Nickel - Classic
    Jefferson - Modern
    Mercury Dime - Classic
    Roosevelt dime - Modern
    SLQ - Classic
    Washington Quarter - Modern
    Walking Lib - Classic
    Franklin - Modern
    Peace dollar - Classic
    Bald guy dollar - Modern
  • I agree with wondercoin. The last of the "classical" style coinage was the demise of the Walking liberty Half in '47. When we switched to nothing but presidential portraits, our coinage lost a lot artistically.

Classic? Modern? Who the hell cares? You either like a coin design or you don't. I mean, 100 years from now people will say the Ike is a classic. So what's the big deal? image

I'd go with 1964, marked by the death of the silver coin.

I agree with the switch to all dead people designs was the start of moderns, so 47-48 was the transition point.

Anything made after the civil war.
  • I tend to break it into three categories...

    pre-1933 classic
    1933-1971 semi modern
    1972 to present is modern

  • Modern: Any series found in circulation or that you could get from the bank when and after you were born.

Pre-modern: Any series you couldn't find in circulation or get from a bank when you were a kid.

Classical: The nice coins in the glass case at the coin shop that you couldn't afford when you were a kid.

    Ancient: Hammered coins.

Thus, it will likely vary for all of us. If you could get Morgans from the bank and find Walkers occasionally when you were a kid...then they feel like Modern coins. But, if you're a kid today....the Morgans and Walkers will definitely feel non-Modern. Same with wheats, mercs, buffs, frankys.
    Go well.
  • Anything prior to 1967 (my birth year) is classic, anything after is modern. image
