Waited a week and finally got my PW to post my first message...and here it is. I just started collecting very recently, started with AEs and now looking for some sets to start. I have been reading the posts and learning alot for about a month or so. I was trying to start a set with a certain 1945-D jefferson but I got outbid. Anyways glad to be here and hope to learn much more.

Eric-
Welcome.
If you have a 1979 and 1980 proof set and you want to submit some coins to PCGS for grading, you could build a SBA $1 proof set.
It's only 6 coins and you have 2 (if they are worthy of submission).
Or a Sacawagea proof set has 3 coins - and you'd be tied as #2 if you had 3 69's (there are some new 2002 PR70DCAMs made that aren't eligibile yet until next month)

Again, welcome to the forum. A lot of good people and a tremendous wealth of knowledge at your fingertips. Make use of it.
as per the advice by pmh, get some books and/or study. numismatics by definition is, after all, study. find an area of interest, search here for the guys or gals that specialize in that area and drive 'em nuts with questions!!! go to shows and patronize the local shop. subscribe to CoinWorld, NN or one of the coin related magazines. most importantly, make a personal vow to enjoy the hobby!!!

be your best bet on learning to grade. Much of learning to grade is just looking
at lots of coins. Use an incandescent light and tilt the coin. You'll learn to look at
the high points and the luster. You'll learn to look for hairlines and bagmarks and
strike.
If you have any interest in varieties there are several books you'll need. Start with
The Cherrypickers Guide and go from there.
I'm new as well, I just got my password...actually my second one...the first one last month would not work and I did not get any response from the forum help so I signed up again under a new name. This one worked and I'm here looking to get in on some of the fun.
Dana.
