A complete set of Franklins MIGHT get you into the TOP 40...

Are there any other registry series (series - not proof sets or mint sets or 3 coin series) that have this high level of completion? Seems like the Franklins are one of the most competitive series in the registry! COOL! image

There are now 25 complete sets and 87 total in proof Kennedy halves. It's been growing by about two sets a week (net, after attrition). One set debuted this week at #10.

    FC,

What are the rational among us to do about the 1953-S in our FBL sets??

    Hi David - Merry Christmas!

What are the rational ones to do?

    A. Keep looking at the odd 53 mint sets that we come across and hope
    B. Keep drooling and cursing everytime a REAL 53S MS65FBL comes up for sale
    C. Get one of these real cheap!

Actually - I just saw where Rick Tomaska (or someone from R&I) purchased one of these (MS66) from ebay for $300. I paid $160 for mine about 2 years ago so I think someone may be getting wise to the fact that there are only 180something of these in the PCGS registry and the number isn't going up!

Did I see this right? Wasn't there 2 1953-S MS66 FBL'S? I recall seeing only one listed now in the pop reports, is that right? What happened to the other coin. Didn't that coin sell for something like $63,000? Just wondering.image

    Paul.

    Later, Paul.
  • Paul:

There's only one listed in the pop reports and that one resides in the #1 JFS Set. I don't know if perhaps there's a set out there with an estimated grade, but neither NGC or PCGS have another.

Why worry about the 53S in FBL? The way I read the registry weights, the 53S only gets a weight of 2. Even though you get 5 bonus points for the FBL, it is minimized by the low weight. As far as I can tell buying a 66 instead of a 65 FBL will only lower your grade by about a .07. Surely you can make that up with other pieces. Of course, if you are shooting for a top 3 set, then you might want the FBL. But let those folks play the game. If you are one of those folks, then you already have a plan, I'm sure.

What if you don't care about the registry, and just want a great set. Then look around and find a great high end 66 for a couple hundred bucks. It should be a better coin then the 65FBL that costs what these days, $10,000 or so? Why is the 66 a better coin? Well assuming the grades are correct, a 66 is viewed as better because it is graded higher. Assuming you bought a real 66, it is better than a real 65FBL, when the coin is viewed as a whole. The 66 might even have a better strike in all areas except the lower bell lines. So, in conclusion, if you select the right 66, you get a better coin with a better strike, save $10,000, and only give up .07 points if you even care about the registry. Sounds like a winner to me. Time to start thinking, and stop worrying about what someone else tells you to do.

    Cheers

    Greg
  • Greg, my logic exactly...why pay $9,800+ for the "FBL" on the slab, when you can get as nice (or hopefully better) coin...
