asking for coins for Christmas is one thing,

but would you actually let someone else choose the coin you've been waiting so long to acquire. I wouldn't, not if I want to be happy with it.

  • I'll say no.. i would end up with either wheat penny or one of those gold clad 1933 double eagle things

That's why I asked for numismatic reference books. I got the US Minting process and error/variety book. After I spend some time studying it, I'll be much smarter! image I think reference books are good for another reason. You spend a lot of time just reading and learning and not spending. Then when you do spend, you spend better. Now I am starting to practice what I just said!
  • wouldn't you think educating your wife for instance (if your married of course) for a month or so before christmas on a specific coin would help your cause. It works for me.

I never ask for coins. My family knows I want to pick my own. I do ask for books or magazine subscriptions(never get them though).

My wife wants nothing to do with my coins(unless she can spend the money I get from selling some). Trying to educate her on coins is a hopeless cause.
  • I have the same problem - the only thing my wife knows about coins (and ever wants to know about coins) is how to spend them! image

Usually, when someone in the family buys me coins, I end up with one of the colorized ASE or something like that - although this year my brother did get me a very nice Constantine I Roman coin and a silver turn-of-the-century Persian coin. imageimage

I have an opposite wife: She likes to buy me nice coins. For Christmas she bought me a 1795 PCGS VG-8 Half Dollar from Anaconda and a 1853 PCGS MS-64BN from David Lawrence. Both coins are cool, and nice looking. She is very much near-sighted so she can really pick out the coins.

OK. Here`s how it`s done. You go to a coin store with your spouse. You look around and say, for example, gee that Norfolk commem is really nice and leave empty handed. If you`re good it might be under the tree for Christmas!!! That`s my secret.

I wouldn't want them picking out a coin for many reasons.

If you are an experienced collector or good customer, you'll likely get the coin cheaper than a novice looking for a gift.
  • Very smart thinking, nwcs! image
  • I didn't ask for but did receive one of those rare 1889cc proof morgan $1's you see advertised in the newspapers and magazines. It was from a co-worker who knew I was a collector- it's the thought that counts, right?
