Do I trust this seller?

For Christmas, my wife wanted to get the Susan B Anthony 1981-S Type 2 coin for my set. It retails about $180.00. After calling a number
of places, Coast to Coast, Columbia, MD told her that he had the coin in a 1981 Proof Set.

After going over and over the difference in costs,
he assured her again that the Type 2 was in the proof set and that he would sell her the proof set for retail of $8.50.
It came in and it sure looks like the Type 2 with a 5 x magification, but how do I really tell?

And if it is, what a wonderful deal. If not, the 1981 SBA Type 1 is still valued at $8.50 so I have not lost any money.

Any opinions, should I send it in for slabbing and let them verify it?

  • geez, I think you did alright didnt lose any cash. But would be careful would be careful buying things that cost more money if he let this slip by him what else could he miss. BUy a FBL franky that is not a FBL.

Here is a link that shows the difference. LInk
The photos are near the bottom.
It's been posted here before, but never hurts for it to come back once and awhile.
  • Have a responsible, knowledegable dealer check it out or, better yet, send it in for grading! Twowood
  • Thank you twowood, as I really think sending it in would be the best.
  • Tade,

    Coinnerd's link should help.

If you want a physical comparison, I can send you a raw type 1, so you can compare the 'S' and then send it back to me.

  • wasn't there talk about a 3rd type on the proof SBA's? i thought a bunch of people from this fourm sent it what they thought were T-2 when they came back T-1.
  • Fantaslize:

I have two raw Type 1's for comparision, but I worry about fakes. Then again, they are going into albums, and if it looks like a Type 2 then I will let my future generations worry about it.

  • I've never heard of anybody faking a Type 2, though there's a first time for everything. I think it'd be particularly tricky to do on a proof coin without leaving evidence.

For a simple way to compare to known examples, compare to the previous and succeeding year's proof sets:

    1981-S Type 1 -- Same as any 1980-S
    1981-S Type 2 -- Same as any 1982-S
