Wrong coins in Gangs of NY?

I went to see "Gangs of New York". There's one scene where they are playing poker and they briefly show the coins. I didn't know it was coming so I didn't get a chance to be absolutely sure, but I think they were Barbers.

Cool!...

Except the movie is set in 1862 image

Maybe I just "projected". ;-)

It was a pretty good movie by the way, kind of long though.

  • Probably SBA dollars. Cheaper, and just as unrecognizable to the general moviegoing public. image
  • Maybe they were Civil War tokens. image

I have a hard time imaging DiCaprio as a tough guy. So I won't watch the movie. but it would be funny if they were titanic medals.

They did use Barbers in Titanic, at least they got that right!
I often look for that accuracy also, Producers are suppose to hire consultants on historical accuracy.
    I guess they take shortcuts.

Actually, by 1862, both gold and silver were out of circulation (hoarded) and even Indian Head cents were being replaced or augmented by tokens, so it would be rather unlikely that they would be using coins at all - unless they were showing off, sort-of like playing Monopoly with real money!

Wow, I guess if they did use a consultant, they should get the money they paid him back.

I saw at least one seated liberty. Couldn't make out anything else.

Well, i t seems that in DiCaprio's "Catch Me If You Can," Spielberg consulted with the ANA to make sure they got it right. If there is any discrepancy, we'll know who's at fault. image
