  • You can even wah-wah-wah-wonder if you want, I'm not sure it'll help much. image
  • i'm sure the guys at PCGS already had a look at this one, thats why it's in a SEGS. it's probably just the pic but it looks like there is no bell line to me.

  • Lucy - first of all it's in a SEGS holder. They're notorious for putting up 53S coins in FBL holders when they're not. The sure fire way to tell that it's not is the price. A 53S in MS64FBL has been going for anywhere from $3,000 to $4,000. Why on earth would someone sell one for $700?

I've spoken to the people at Fairtraderz who deal with these particular coins on a regular basis and their response to this question is basically the same - it's in a SEGS holder.

  • Yeah - I hear ya - but it was worth posting. I hate when these SEGS pieces appear on the market - they're obviously not graded properly, but they continue to appear - let the buyer beware.

With the number of 53-S certified FBL, true FBLs, might as well settle on a high grade well struck one (if that is possible image ). I'm beginning to wonder if the 53S can be had with true full bell lines. For the money asked, I think they should look like NGC FBLs, but last time I knew, you could count those certified by NGC on one hand. What does that say about PCGS FBL standards? No, not that they all went into PCGS holders; it is just an impossible coin that PCGS may be "fudging" on. Heck, a decent looking 51S is tough; don't know just what they were doing out in 'Frisco. It's almost as if they were opposed to this coin and struck them accordingly.

There comes a time where you have to draw the line somewhere - I agree with you - for $4000 I better get bell lines that make you howl at the moon, anything less would be a crying shame. But then the next piece of the puzzle falls and when you can get a piece like the one below in MS66, which has a population of about 180, and can be gotten for about $200, then you have to really ask yourself the question - isn't 34 out of 35 FBL's pretty good? image
