marcmoishmarcmoish Posts: 6,278 ✭✭✭✭✭
Would appreciate expert MERC advice on this....I purchased this 1916 Mercury Dime on E-BAY described as PCGS MS66FB SUPERB WHITE no reverse photo shown or any mention of HAIRLINES on reverse left & right surfaces. Seller has good rating! Said he'd take it back but PCGS graded and whatever....
Does anyone know if Hairlines is normal on this coin/Date??

Thanks guys & gals.................Marc

    Marc,

I certainly can't tell for certain from the images but - what you think to be hairlines on the reverse might be uneven haze / patina or die polish lines.

Even if there are some hairlines or other imperfections, we're talking about an MS66 here, not an MS68 - imperfections are permissible and should be expected on an MS66 coin.

Mark , if I know its permissible and if indeed they are polish lines I'd be happy with that. Did you enlarge the scan??Its for a registry set I'm starting to work on. Ok, I don't think its scratches per se, its def not haze or patina etc Its blast white and I see those lines, I'd say 3o-40 on both sides, whichever way I look under lamps & mag. So if it is polish lines.....I guess I'm OK w/that.

The 1876 trade dollar in my MS set is blast white and has the look of a higher grade, but has a mixture of grade limiting die polish lines and light hairlines. Thus the MS66 grade. Like Mark says, some light lines are acceptable even at MS66.

Regarding the dime, the question to be asked is if the coin has the look of an MS67, but is limited in grade by die polish or light reverse hairlines. If so, I'd think this would be an acceptable coin to most. However, if the look isn't all there and the lines are bothersome, I'd return the coin.

Typical die polish for a 1916, the coin is original in every way. The reverse has the look and the
    strike for the grade.

    Happy holidays,

Thanks everyone so much, a little unique neighborhood here, makes serious collecting more enjoyable.
The coin is a super piece, I attached the OBV. Its definently graded correctly, I guess I haven't seen those lines B4 on a Merc etc, and panicked.

I've owned 10 to 15 of these 16P Mercs and have never had one with Die Polish (If it is) like this on one of them. Never have had a 66 coin so maybe the higher grade examples display some different traits than thier lower grade brothers.

One thing I will say is it would be Very,Very unusual to see a PCGS MS66 Merc with hairlines. Heck they will hardly put a 64 grade on one with hairlining.

    Nice Looking Merc.
