Nice coin Frank! But it's kind of hard to tell a grade from a scan with that kind of toning. mike image

How is the luster, any hazing show up at different light angles? I don't see any hits that stand out. What's going on aroung the nose and eye? Could be up to a 66 or higher. mdwoods

  • Well - Wisconsin got it right off the bat, I just wanted to see what kind of slack we'd see from the forum on the grade.

Head on the coin looks like envelope toning. I liked the fact that the fields are very clean and that there is a LOT of brilliance that comes through beneath the toning:

When you tilt the coin you can see a ring of magenta/blue around the outside of the coin, circling light brown gold toning in the middle. I kinda like this coloring myself. The magenta/blue is almost irridescent with the brilliance coming in from underneath. I tried to capture it with the picture below, but the brilliance didn't come through as I wanted it to:

The reverse is also clean with very few marks for the grade. It's mostly white with a touch of toning swatches on the perifery. The coin is very well struck which is nice too. There's good hair detail, except for right above the ear which is almost there. The cotton boles, leaves and ears of wheat are very well defined. On the reverse the eagle's feathers are very well defined, as are the leaves on the wreath. With a mintage of 228,000, it's actually lower than the 81CC, but that coin seems to be more popular among collectors. Given everything that it had going for it, I thought it was a good buy at the 64 "ASK" price.
