Any very cam 1955-1972, plus the 1975 set.

Is this question BR( Before Russ ) or AR ( After Russ )image. I would have to say from what I have seen here since Russ started collecting coins that the 1964 proof sets are the most broke open. mike image

I'd guess the 1961-1963 sets to get the Franklin.

However, if you're looking for a percentage, then the earlier sets (pre-1950) have practically all be ripped apart.
  • Gotta agree with keets, pre-1976 if there are any deep cameo candidates

.........from a percentage standpoint, greg is probably correct with the 1950 and earlier sets. i checked a january 2001 PCGS pop report and it seems the 1950-53 and 1960-67 sets along with 1970 were broken up quite a bit, at least from the listed pops. not really scientific. it's probably a safe bet to assume not many sets yield more than 1 or 2 coins. and as others have noted humorously, 1964 seems to be high.

1964 for the shot at the Kennedy getting CAM/DCAM.

  • i'd say 1990 because i keep getting them with no s on the cent...soooo i have to crack it and then put the others in a after market holder and buy a proof s cent to replace the damn defective one!!!

Forget the 1964 Kennedy, that year's sets are broken down by far the most because of their mintage, but also because that year contains more known doubled die reverse cents and doubled die reverse nickels than any other proof year. There are over 60 known proof DDR cents that year alone. Die variety colletors, including myself, break down the 64 sets all the time. I think I busted 15 of them last year alone. I take the leftover stuff, non-variety coins, to the local dealer and dump them....mostly quarters and halves.

I hate it when that happens. And now it's too late to return them to the mint for a good one!
