Do you ever prefer AU coins?

I just got a really nice AU coin that blows away most uncs I've seen for the date. My scanner has the ability to see through luster and only show details, but the coin is much nicer than shown.

Considering the fact that the coin is much less in AU than BU, I'm very happy to find an AU that looks better for a lower price.

How often does this happen to you?

Hey good to see a thread about coins. I like to buy AU coins once in a while. I like the slider ones when I'm starting to collect a new series. Mainly to be able to see the light wear, but also because they are much nicer looking like you mentioned.

All the time. If I can't afford a coin in MS64+, I prefer an AU58 Slider. Most of the time, they are much nicer, with fewer marks. IMO

Hey that's one of them foreign things-you know you're not sposed to bring those thing here!
But to answer your ?, no I don't prefer a circulated coin over a Mint State coin.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • I love AU-58's, like my Indian I got it much cheaper than ms-60 but it looks better than almost all 62's, and even a few 64's.

I love AUs for the money. Question - when referring to AUs, what is meant by a "slider"?
  • I have an AU58 1925 Peace Dollar thats pretty nice. There`s a few ticks and thier not at all distracting. I`m still " learning the ropes " when it comes to whats typical and whats not. When I compare it to some of my MS63 common date Morgans, the AU Peace is alot nicer and more appealing in my eyes.

I like AU when I can't afford MS. And I like even lower grades when I can't afford AU. image

According to no less an authority than Bill Fivaz, AU is the grade of the future. Can't go wrong collecting AU image

AU58PQ is the best deal in collecting. I have an 1853 A&R 25c in AU58 that is sooooo original and MS64ish looking.

Now kill this thread so the word doesn't get out!

absolutely. AU's fool even the experts, so if it looks, tastes, and feels like a pricy MS for the reduced cost of an AU...then you have a bargain.

AU58's have the slightest of wear that is barely discernable and they sell for fractions less in many cases than their MS65 counterparts and can look just as nice.

I go for mint state whenever possible. Au if the coin is exceptional. Au is a nice album coin grade, IMO.
I don't have many au pieces in my collection.

All I have to add is, wait till you naysayers submit a nice MS coin that gets graded AU58.image

You are so right about AU vs.UNC-BU.

Many of my Bust halves and Barber quarters /halves are nicer in AU than MS62.
Why spend the extra money when many of the AUs in Bust/Barber have superior eye appeal.
The same is the case with early British Commonwealth.

    Happy Holidays,
    Brian.

My purchases are based on eye appeal. I would be very happy to pay AU or slider money for a coin with Choice or Gem eye appeal.

Casey, a ``slider'' is a coin that has the teeniest bit of friction on the high points, but looks like an Choice UNC in every other way.

    Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Please, have the common courtesy to keep quiet about this topic!

At least, until I get the rest of the AU Indian Head cents and Barber Quarters I want. image

AU's frustrate me......really frustrate me.....so close to Mint State, until you take a closer look.

I avoid them, with one exception. I do like Bust material in AU, just because MS prices are nuts.

It depends on how far down the list you go. I'd prefer AU over all of my XF coins.image
