What is it about the 1986-s proof set that makes it more in price then the others
in that time frame
is their a reason or some coin in it

i could be wrong...but i think its the jefferson that makes it that much....i know its one of em...im almost sure its the nickle..

A dealer I spoke with during the summer mentioned that some years ago some large catalog group were sending a Proof Kennedy with every order of $xxx (I'm not sure of the minimum), and they happened to destroy a lot of 1986 Proof sets in doing so. I don't know if that is the only reason, but it sounds, at least, reasonable.

It's the low mintage issue of the era, and it's believed that it is much
more scattered than the others since there were lots of small orders.

There is no reported no-S 1986 proof coin. This set is usually extremely high
quality during a time that all the sets are good quality. Perhaps people see
these and just can't part with them since they are pretty?

It may also be a "value by association" thing as well. The 1986 MINT set had a very low mintage that year. Lowest since the early 60's and it went WAY up on the secondary market for awhile. I belive it still brings a premium over the other years. Well it may have caused a smaller artificial rise in the value of the proof set for that years as well.
