Who Has This Slabbed Coin? Pop 1?

front

<URL>back

I got this souvenir at the 1964 NY World's Fair at the Atomic Energy Commission exhibition. You put a dime in the plastic "slab" and inserted it into the machine. It irradiated it and came out for you to keep as a souvenir. BTW, it's a 1943 Mercury dime that I swear turned dark due to the irradiation. I think I have seen it glowing in the dark, too!

I have an irradiated Roosevelt and the holder is different... it is not blue, nor does it glow in the dark.

I saw one on eBay one time. I thought it was neat. I don't think it was in a WF holder though.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

  • Those are pretty neat little souveneirs. I have been thinking about picking one up on Ebay. They show up at times and only go for a few bucks or so.

BTW: To all of you worried about ChiefBob's future progeny...The dimes are harmless. image

  • Dog, there are Roosies roaming around in irradiated holders too. From the 50ies and 60ies, I believe. Not sure what all events they were given out at back in the day.

Mine says it was irradiated with neutrons, I'll have to look for it. If I recall correctly, it is from the Atomic Energy Commission and was used as advertisement to demonstrate the safety of nuclear power...

No, Russ, it's true: radiation is our friend! BTW, I have two beautiful, winged-head kids.

Speaking of radiation, is anyone old enough to remember Buster Brown shoe stores? They had a neat machine where you slid your feet into the bottom of it, pressed a button, and viewed your skeletal feet! It's a good thing we didn't have to buy "dress" shoes very often, or my feet would be more webbed than they are now.

Well, without radiation we wouldn't have light and heat (among other nice things like Microwaves). So I think it's a good thing. I wonder what that irradiated it with? Odds are, it's half-life is pretty short. And I'm quite certain they'd only use alpha radiation which is basically harmless unless you ingested it. So don't eat any irradiated coins, and you'll be fine. image

Stujoe . . . I haven't been on in a week or so and this was the first thread I looked at. I fell out of my chair laughing. I watched A Christmas Story again the other night. Didn't every young boy live this same life???? It truly gets better every time you watch it. I finally got a Daisy when I was 10, but I never shot my eye out!

  • I bought the DVD this week at Walmart. My 10 year old watched it with me the other night. He had never heard of it before and I could tell he was skeptical when it started but after 10 minutes he was laughing out loud. Now he wants to watch it all the time too. image

I had a Daisy air rifle when I was a kid and still have both my eyes. I keep waiting for my boy to ask for one now. I want to throw a "No! You'll shoot your eye out!" at him. image
