The National Next Year in Atlantic City

Hi Everyone,

How great is this. The National, Atlantic City. Gambling ! PSA Graded Cards ! Drinking ! More Gambling ! PSA Graded Cards ! I just got off the phone with my Casino (Trump Marina) and booked a room for the 21st to 23rd of July 2003. It starts on the 21st (Monday), until the 27th (Sunday). Now all I have to do is make sure I save enough money to buy cards. It's great, now some of us on the East Coast can have fun. I keep missing it because of the traveling with my business. It should be alot of fun.

The last one I went to was 1984 in Parsippany. I vividly remember the Wagner card in a tall case, with an armed guard standing next to it.

I blew a lot of money that day ($105 was a lot for a 15 year old kid!).

I'm hoping to drop some serious coin there this year.

I had trouble making it through the Ft. Washington show before running out of money. The National will be a challenge!

I've got my reservations at the Sheraton!

Oh, my Vegas friend...there's no sports betting in AC!
Why do I get the feeling, that some cards are worth money, while others are not?

I'll be there this year! First National! Woo hoo! After missing my first Ft. Washington show in quite a while, I've decided to save the money I had saved for Ft. Washington, and put it toward my funds for the National. I'll be driving by then, but the real funny thing is, this was a rather easy sell to my parents anyways because we go to Cape May, NJ every summer, and AC is only an hour away. Better continue to save my money, I'm going to be looking for a nice '68 Ryan this year image.

I would also agree with excitement over the national. Living in Mass. never been able to get to a national. Am excited to do the gambling/national and picking up some great graded cards. Will be able to save some serious cash for July. image

I hear there are some really comfortable mattresses near the A.C. Expressway that are available for public use...after the casinos are through with you that is!

    Zardoz,

RE: Your new sig. line pic, is that really you? I thought George Reeve blew his head off with a large caliber handgun. If so, how is he still posting messages on this board in 2002 under the name Zardoz51?

I merely faked my death and now spend my days hanging out with Elvis. Where do you think that he came up with the idea?

No Sportsbook in AC? How uncivilized! Still, I guess that Trump and his cronies had to come to some agreement with Tony Soprano and his ilk and give them some of the action. Let's face it, being union built in NJ, without some accomodation, they'd still be constructing the first casino.

crazysc. After the casinos are through with me, I will be needing a matress near the expressway. It's a good thing that the show is in July and not Jan. The insulating qualities of newspaper as a blanket leaves much to be desired.

Isn't the standard AC game 8-deck? Is there anywhere in AC you can find a single-deck game? I just can't keep the count straight for more than a few minutes image

I'll be attending the National in A.C. as well.

It'll be a treat to finally put some faces to some ID's.

(They) say that a person picks a certain kind of dog that reflects the person itself. Well, I wonder if that's true about people and icons (ID's).........

    Let's see.....Zardoz is a drumming weiner........

    Alan,

I remember the last time I went, I think there were 2 new types of Black Jack. One with all of the cards dealt which is stacked more in the house's favor because you will hit a 17 if the dealer has 20 showing which throws off the deck (my belief). The 2nd type was with 2 decks I believe, but there were some crazy rules, which favor the house on that one too. I like losing my money the old fashion way on Black Jack. Dice, now that's an entirely different story. Except for 2 times (one was my bachelor party), I have always lost. I bet right which was the way I was taught. My pop has a great arm. I was told by him, I have a lead arm (G rated story). He actually said something else. One time, I 7'd out with about $1500 on the table. From that point on, I do not pickup, just bet. Anyway, back to cards. This should be a great show. I was thinking of meeting up with Joe Orlando and bringing my 52 Bowman set to see if I could bump up some cards. I think that would be the place to go. Anyway, Happy Holidays.

AC is no Vegas. A sewer hole in comparison. Allthough you can get a corn dog on the board walk for a buck & half.

Where is the best place to stay for the convention? I like the idea of a hotel with a casino. The "Convention" hotel is the Sheraton, but it is not oceanfront, and does not have a casino. If I take my wife and kids, is the beach worth swwimming in? And if so, are the casino hotels oceanfront? Finally, is it very far from the oceanfront to the convention center?

A lot of questions, but any and all advice is welcome. I suspect others are wondering the same things.

Buckwheat, the Beach is ok. Don't be afraid. You can rent a tent too.

The casinos are oceanfront, but don't expect a room with a view. At the height of the summer you may or may not get what you want. You won't be in the room anyway. You'll be at the Convention or gambling in the casino!

The casinos are all a short cab ride away from anything including the Convention center. There are also shuttle buses that will take you directly from the casino to the Convention Center. It think most of the casinos have them.

The most important thing is that you gamble and eat corn dogs, salt water taffy, and vanilla custard. Everything else will take care of itself.

    Buckwheat,

Bally's Park Place is an excellent choice. Outdoor pool, indoor pool and spa, and beachfront. Plenty for my wife and kids to do while I'm busy. Just a few blocks from convention center. [Sounds like a plug, but they did comp my McCartney tickets 4th row, so I love 'em] image

For all you guys that have never attended a national,The minute that you enter you have just DIED and gone to BASEBALL CARD HEAVEN!!! OH, and by the way,you can't bring enough money.I attended the national in "Hotlanta",Ga in the late 80's,89 I think and have been trying to finagle a way to get back ever since.I would really like to set up a meeting place and meet you guys that I have been reading and laughing with over these last few months. Someone in the know should make a suggestion and everyone try to meet for a "board meeting"(pun intended).

Bally's Tower is where I'll be. I'm there most weekends anyway. Gamblin is gamblin, AC is definately not as family friendly but during the day Cape May and Somers Point Pier are nearby and a great place for the wife and kids. Its also easy to get to, so they wont get lost.

As the token A.C. area resident, I'll give you guys a few thoughts. A spot to consider for the board meeting are the Tun Tavern. Microbrewery and bar connected to the Sheraton and convention center. More convenient than anything. Also the Irish Pub (more bar than dining), and Angelo's (good Italian restaurant bar). Both are located right off the end of the Expressway.

For the wife and kids, Cape May is nice (shopping, Zoo, etc..), but it is about an hour away right down the Parkway. As for beaches, go to Longport. More residential than touristy. Also, if you so desire, you could then go up the road to Margate and eat on "Lucy" that stupid elephant. Since the tunnel was built, getting to the Marina and Brigantine island are also much easier. You can also just drive around town, and see why Baltic Ave. and Mediterranean are so cheap in Monopoly.image

You have Atlantic Ave. and Pacific Ave., and do not plan to go any further inland than that. Unless of course you are driving with your doors locked, and not stopping at stop signs.

    RobBob,

Sorry my town is such a "sewer hole", but I still call it home.
