How much would you pay?

for a "high relief" mint set? Someone had a thread a while ago that showed just how crappy modern coins have become, even compared with the late-60s and early 70s. Do you think it would be a worthy effort for the mint to produce a higher relief version of our coins just for collectors? Would it be worth a premium? I was thinking I might be willing to pay $30 or $40 for such a set if it was really well done. What are your thoughts?

I don't really collect the modern stuff but I am sure they would sell and it would be nice to see these coins in high relief but on the other hand the mint makes so many coins already would this be overkill? would the mint make these coins in proof, mint, clad, silver, and with several mint marks? Just some thoughts. mike image

I'd be willing to pay about what I pay for proof sets from the mint.

Up to $100 for high-relief in silver and 100% copper. The problem is, the design changes are just about as bad as the strike pressure and materials used. The elimination of the hair detail, and the replacement with spagetti, and the shield changes on the half suck. I'd also like the old Washington reverse on those coins. You suggest it, and I'll second it. BTW - If they do the Sac in Gold, I'd pay $250.

  • right now i wouldnt pay anything for a set of modern coins. If they change the designs to decent looking desingns then i'd think about buying a set.

I believe that high relief in combination with nice new designs would be worth upto 30 bucks. I agree with Don on the gold Sac, I'd go 250 on that one.

I was going to complain about the spaghetti hair, but dheath beat me to it. image If they could make Lincoln look like he did when the Lincoln cent first came out in 1909, and perform similar improvements on the other coins, I'd definitely sign up.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
