    I noticed the seller was giving a free WTC 1999 MS-69 $50 to the 201st bidder, which could explain the staggering number of bids. Probably someone jumping the bid by the minimum increment as fast as they could to get the free coin.

    New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

    Hmmm...Maybe it's because this coin, like every other WTC coin was in a vault in 5 WTC (not in the towers) which survived virtually intact? The building was heavily damaged, but from the reports I've read, when they reconnected the power to the vault, it was an eerie experience, as if nothing ever happened there.

    I am not sure of the specifications of the vault, no doubt it was heavily reinforced, but the point is the vault was not in the main zone of the collapse, but in another building in the northeast corner of the complex (I believe). The purveyors of these coins (whom I disdain) would have people believe that these coins were found strewn among the debris and devastation, but that could not be further from the truth. Now, the safe deposit boxes that were located in the Chase and Citibank branches in the lobbies of the towers did take the full force of the collapse, and were virtually destroyed, leaving the contents severly damamaged. Despite the reinforced steel in the vault, they were still destroyed in the collapse, which would have been the same fate of these coins had they actually been within the footprint of the towers.

    And that is basically why these coins should carry no premium... besides... why didn't people focus on the towers, and not the vaults in the wake of it?

    I really have a problem with people who sell stuff like this, and I even get emotional about the stuff they've brought up from the Titanic, and that was over 90 years ago! I put these people in the same category as the street merchants that were hawking 8x10s of the towers in flames on every street corner in lower Manhattan when I was in New York two months after the attacks. It's reprehensible! Ask yourselves, would you be willing to buy a PCGS slab of a Walking Liberty half brought up from the USS Arizona? It's the same thing, except far more lives were lost on September 11, 2001 than were lost at Pearl Harbor. And PCGS should be ashamed for being a part of it. Personally, I think the responsible thing to do would be to melt all of those coins into non-descript bars.

    Obviously, the seller owns both coins in MS70 and wants to establish a phoney value to them in order to get a precident. Then he/she will try to sell the other coin in auction or by private party with an "established" price of $17000. Believe it or not, many low pop coins, classic and raw, go through this process.

    Not necessarily - I've run private auctions and I've never bid on one of my coins and I've never asked anyone to bid on my coins.

    However, the rapidity with which the "bidders" in the referenced auction have bid against each other, among other things certainly indicates to me that there really isn't a bidding war going on.

    I'm afraid people would pay a lot for such a coin, even if in fact it would have been found miles away on a beach in Waikiki and somehow got into a pedigreed slab saying it came from the USS Arizona. image

    Let's get serious. No one in the world is going to actually pay on that auction. It's just some people having fun. They'll renig on it at the end. IMHO
