[UPDATE~ARRIVED TODAY] 1963 Franklin Half Roll Original /PAPER ROLL

Just bought my first roll of Franklin Half Dollars with a 3 second snipe. image

I've heard that it's hard to get GEM Frankie's from rolls, but I thought that I'd give it a try.

Good or bad, let us know what you get. I'd really like to know if these rolls are worth the money. Personally I'm hoping it's a roll of gemsimage

Just so people know, you can "re-roll" these wrappers. People sell the little platic gadget on eBay to do this.

And yet, some of this auctions are honest and the rolls have never been opened such as the roll that if memory serves me right, Coindaughter sold on Ebay........

  • The roll arrived today.

I'm no expert but I do believe that this roll was original and had not been opened. It was nice and tight.

After looking at the spectacular end roll toning on the reverse of one of the outside coins I was very excited.

    Then I opened the roll..........

All of the coins have blazing original mint luster. They also have lots of "chatter" on them.
No major heavy marks. (Except for one)
I would say that one would go MS64 and the remaining coins would go MS63 .

And as my luck would have it, the only coin with a major mark is the one with the end roll toning. A nice long mark that starts at Frankie's ear and go's all the way down to the collar of his coat.

Lucy, I said that if they where nice I would send you one. They are not as nice as I hopped for, but I would still be more than happy to send one to you...

I guess I'll throw 'em on eBay with a BIN of $4.00 each including shipping.

wow! what a sweetie............ I'm sorry you didn't find many gems....but for the price you paid it was worth a shot and if you can recoup the money, keep trying...

I believe the Gems are out there, waiting to be discovered......image

  • 1963's are notoriously baggy, even MS-65's look like crap. I think Tomaska in his new book talks about buying a $1000 mint sewn bag and only getting a few 65's out of it.
  • That's correct Jon - not only was there a lot of mishandling of these issues, but they were also damaged in counting machines, which many times put a rub mark on the face of Franklin, or on the bell. One of the reasons why I feel that MS65 graded Franklins from the 60-63 era are really a lot harder to come by and very undervalued.

  • I'd stay away from rolls unless I could get them at melt. which I can't do to someone. Also, I thought a "shotgun" roll of halves contained 20.00 versus 10.00.

Very true. I sent in about 30 franklins that my dad left me. All came back 65's and 66's. a bunch w/FBL.
only two 64's in the lot, and both FBL! Talk about a homerun!image
